I popped in a DVD with the label "Free Surf" on it. I grabbed a blanket and cuddled up on the couch while I watched the video.
Matt was in the intro, and I snuck up behind him and yelled, "Just watch me surf!" and I giggled and plopped on my surfboard and paddled out into the ocean. I caught a perfect wave and everyone was cheering. How come I desperately cannot remember this?
I twisted and turned on my board until I landed in the water. I caught another wave, and one more. Then another. I quickly swam towards the shore and ran into Joel's arms and kissed him. Then, Christine jumped on my back and I fell backwards. Aaron, Trey, Matt, Joel, and Seth were all laughing as me and Christine were struggling to get up.
The movie ended and I put in another one. It was called "Interview with Mr. Kernshaw" and was dated not too long ago. I pressed play and started watching.
"We're here with talented 16 year-old Talise! Talise what made you start surfing?" he asked me. I'm guessing that was Mr. Kernshaw.
"My best friend, Christine taught me. We both now surf together and I've had a passion for it ever since" I replied strongly. My heart dropped. No one was lying to me. I loved it and it killed me not knowing what really happened.
He asked a couple more questions. But the last question really clung to me.
"To everyone out there whose interested in surfing, what do you have to tell them?" he asks me.
I pause and think long and hard. "Don't give up. I've actually considered quitting when I failed a move. But I didn't, and I would've gotten nowhere if I did. I love surfing and I put my heart in it. I won't stop no matter what obstacles come my way."
I pause the movie and cry. Whatever happened to me, I wish it wouldn't have. Then I wouldn't be in misery, I wouldn't have to start everything over again, hoping it would jog my memory back. Why me?
I woke up on my couch, with the remote in my hand. My eyes were puffy and there was a blanket over me. I must have fallen asleep.
I took a shower and scrunched my hair. I slipped into my bathing suit and put on a cover up. I ran over to Christines out.
She opened the door grogily.
"Whats up?" she asks as she pulls her hair back.
"Teach me how to surf" I demand.
She looks shocked. But then she smiled. "Be out in a couple minutes."
When she came out, she was holding two surfboards and towels. Trey followed behind her.
We walked to the beach in silence. Was it this awkward around her?
Christine drops all our stuff and faces towards me.
"Talise, listen" she says and she puts her hands on my shoulders.
I nod.
"It's really hard to surf, and since you can't remember how, I'm gonna help you, okay? Just trust your body. The waves are good today so if you fall off, its no big deal. Don't be scared or upset. It takes dedication" she says clearly.
"I gotcha" I reply.
We paddled out together as Trey watched us from shore. She told me that when I see a big wave forming, I dive under and rise up to catch it. Once it carries me, I stand up and balance myself.
I nodded, determined to try this. I found one forming and did exactly what she told me to. The first try, I rose up too late. The second one, I caught it but I couldn't balance well enough and ended up falling off. After about 2 hours of tries, we went to the shore for our water bottles.
Christine stormed to Trey thinking I couldn't hear her, even though I could.
"I can't do this!" I overhear her talk to Trey. She starts to cry.
"Shh, its a process. This is exactly how it was when you first taught her. She'll come through" he whispers.
She nods and walks towards me.
"Lets try again" she says.
I grab my surfboard and plop into the water. Trying and trying again and again. Each time making process but always falling before I could stand up.
Last try, I caught the wave but fell off before I could stand up.
"Ugh!" Christine groaned at my fault.
I can't do this anymore.
I started paddling towards shore. Christine was calling my name and following close behind me.
I dropped my surfboard in the sand and started walking towards my house with tears in my eyes. Christine grabbed my wrist but I pulled free.
"Talise, I'm sorry, I'm just frustrated!" she yells.
I keep walking away, ignoring her comment.
"Talise! It's hard for me! I just miss the old you!" she tires again.
I stop and turn around with tears in my eyes. My throat stung.
"Hard for you?" I ask." I woke up in a hospital thousands of miles away from my home, with people expecting me to know them, and love them. They expect me to know how to surf, and do this and that and I don't even remember one thing!"
I starting balling. Ever since I came home, no one asked me how I was. They all complained to me. My emotions were bottled up inside. This was the closest to expressing how I felt ever since.
"No matter how hard I try, I just can't remember, Christine! I really want to remember, but I can't." I sob.
She just stands there, speechless. I just turn around and walk away crying.
Once I got home, I grabbed my keys and drove to the hospital using my GPS. I got to Matt's room and knocked on his door.
"Come in!" I heard him say.
I walk in, breathing in and out deeply to keep from crying.
He looked concern when he saw me.
"Are you okay?" he asks.
I bite my lip and squeeze my eyes together and force out a "no".
He opened his arms up. I rushed to him and slipped into the side of his bed. I started crying in his shoulders.
"Everyone expects so much out of me" I say inbetween sobs.
"I know, Tal, I know."
I sat there crying and crying.
"Talise, I want you to know something" Matt says after a couple of minutes.
I nod waiting for an answer.
"Things will get better. Even if you don't get your memory back, you will go back to normal. Trust me" he says.
"Okay. I just needed a shoulder to cry on for a minute" I say.
"I get it" he says.
We flip on the TV and watch The Big Bang Theory. I'm starting to feel like me again.
