“Water bottles?”
“Check.”
“Sunscreen?”
“Check.”
“Tickets?”
“Check.”
“Extra money?”
“Check.”
“Barf bags just incase I vomit?”
“Not funny, Robbie.” I say, my face expressionless as I glance at the check list and then our cheap drawstring bags, making sure we have everything we need. Robbie just smirks in defense.
“Oh, come on, Kelli, you know how much I hate heights. And rollercoasters. I still don’t get why we’re even bothering to go to Six Flags. I’ll just ruin the fun.” Robbie says, coming up to me.
“Don’t worry! It’ll be fun!” I reply reassuringly, lightly punching him in the arm. He gives a face ‘ouch’ face and I giggle.
“What ever you say Kelli,” Robbie puts his hands up in defeat, “But I’m not promising anything.”
If you haven’t figured out yet, Robbie Kay has a terrible fear of heights. For as long as I can remember, which is pretty long because Robbie and I have been friends since kindergarten, Robbie would always choose the lower monkey bars on the swing set at recess, avoid tall bridges when driving, or things of that nature. And now, he’s admitting he’ll ruin our day of fun at Six Flags: Great America. Swell.
“Fine Robbie, just continue reading the list.”
“Extra snacks?”
“Check.”
“Sunglasses?”
“Check.”
“Cellular devices?”
“Check.” I giggle. His British accent always makes everything perfect.
“Looks like we’re good. I’m going to go to the bathroom real quick, meet you in the car.”
“Okay, Robbie.”
I trot down the stars and give my mom a quick squeeze before running out the door and plopping myself down in the passenger seat of Robbie’s red Ford Mustang. All of that acting money really seemed to have gone in his favor.
It has been a while since I have seen Robbie. I had moved to the Chicago junior year, and Robbie and I have finally been reunited after three months. He promised to stay for a few days when flying back from Vancouver after shooting Once Upon A Time, where he played Peter Pan. I would watch the show every Sunday, and I practically balled my eyes out when Pan died. Even seeing Robbie in fake pain made me yearn to comfort him.
Since we only had a few short days together, I thought it would be best to do as much as possible. He had never been to Chicago before, so I wanted to show him all of the sights. SO far, we’ve gone to the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, and to the Sky deck in the Willis Tower.
It was hard not seeing him. And to be honest, I missed him horribly. I love Robbie. I have ever since the seventh grade. His light brown hair sits atop his head perfectly, even when messed up. His sparkling emerald eyes were always full of eagerness and fun. He was perfect. I just don’t know if he has the same feelings for me.
The loud ‘BAM’ of the front door closing snapped me out of my trance, and Robbie walked along our driveway and hopped into the driver’s seat of the car.
“You reaaaaaaaaddy?” He asks, elongating out the ‘A’. With his British accent, it sounded like angels singing their lovely chorus from the Heavens. Not to over exaggerate or anything.
“Oh yeah! Let’s do this!” I say, punching my fists in the air with enthusiasm.
Robbie starts the car and pulls out of the driveway, and we drive through our neighborhood until we make it to the highway.
It takes a full hour to drive to the park, and the entire way Robbie and I just chat. It was kind of soothing, being there with Robbie without a care in the world.
As we got closer to Six Flags, you could see the taller rollercoasters peering over the horizon, and I saw Robbie tense up.
“Hey, it’s okay. I promise I won’t make you do something you don’t want to. I will just convince you.” I wink.
“Yeah, good luck with that.” Robbie scoffs.
We sit in silence until we find our parking spot. Since both of us are pretty pale, we lather up on SPF 50.
“Great. Now I’m all sticky.” I groan while I roll my eyes.
“Yah. But at least we won’t burn to a crisp.”
I laugh at Robbie awkward sense of humor. He seems to always know the correct times to crack a joke or be sarcastic.
Robbie and I stroll over to the entrance. A short, large lady wearing a bright green polo with the logo in the corner and khaki pants comes up to us.
“Hello. How are you two doing today?”
I was about to respond when Robbie interjected, “Good, and you?”
“I’m doing great. How old are you two? I just need to make sure you can be here without an adult.” She says perkily. How she was in this weather, I have no idea.
“I’m 18, and she’s 17.” Robbie gestures towards me.
“Okay. Well, have fun you two. You make such a cute couple.” She says the last word high pitched.
“Thank you.” Robbie says confidently.
I immediately blush and turn to Robbie.
“What was that all about?” I wonder aloud.
Without warning Robbie smashes his lips into mine, right in public. I immediately kiss back, my stomach churning with anxiousness and my lips tingling with excitement.
I knew we were getting stares, but who cares? My crush was making out with me, and he just announced that we were a couple to that woman. This day couldn’t get any better!
We both break away, staring deep into each other’s eyes. I quickly glance to my left to see girls a little younger than me staring in envy.
Finders keepers, I think to myself.
“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that.” Robbie says out of breath.
