My heart was a drum, throbbing and hammering so hard in my chest it felt like it was going to burst. My palms were clammy and I had the urge to use the restroom: my telltale signs that I’m anxious. But I had a good reason to be. Any minute now, the production “Singing in the Rain” was about to start. And I played the main character, Kathy Selden.
When I was informed I got the part, I was enthusiastic. Never in a million years had I ever believed I would get the main role in a play, let alone one in a cavernous theater in front of a large audience. That was until now.
Cursed with stage fright, I was. Every time I would get in front of a mass of individuals and sing I would normally go into freak-out mode. I’m a super shy person to begin with, so this didn’t help at all.
“Ten minutes until the show starts!” The director shouts from over by the buffet table, halfway into a frosted doughnut. He was such a pig.
I take a deep breath.
Robbie’s here. You have nothing to worry about. Just look at him and imagine you’re in your room all alone with just him.
In 1, 2, 3…out 1, 2, 3. Robbie was always so supportive of me. I would sing to him sometimes and every time he would say, “Never gets old.” It’s ironic, really. The fact that he played Peter Pan in Once Upon a Time makes me giggle every time he says that.
That’s how we fit like a puzzle. Both of us have a compassion for acting like no other. It’s the one thing we can chat about for hours, listing off our favorite TV shows and actors and actresses.
“Five minutes! Everyone, get in your spots! This is it!”
My legs are spaghetti from underneath me. I tread to my spot on the stage. The deep velvet curtain slowly opens, and everything goes silent.
The plot of the play is about a girl named Kathy who can sing really well, while Don's co-star for silent films, Lina, cannot. Don and Lina star in silent movies together and everyone thinks they're a couple. Lina is affectionate towards Don but the feelings aren't returned. Lina blackmails Kathy into being her singing voice unaccredited in the short films they do with sound.
The film they do is a hit and the crowd wants Lina to sing for them. So they set it up to have Kathy sing for her again. Cosmo, Don's best friend, makes it very evident that Lina is a phony. Out of mortification, Lina flees. Don introduces Kathy to the audience as the real star of the performance and they kiss in front of a billboard for the new film they'll do together called Singing in the Rain.
By the end of the show, the audience had gone wild and gives a standing ovation. When it’s time for curtain call, I go out and the applause gets even louder. Robbie stands in the front, a huge grin plastered upon his face. The cast and I do the final bow, the clapping not ceasing until we are off the stage. Everyone congratulates me, telling me what a great job I did.
“Hannah!” yells Robbie from behind the crowd of people around me. They all break away to let him come through.
“Robbie!” I squeal. He picks me up and spins me around, kissing me on the forehead in the process. I laugh about how cliché he is.
“You did great.” He whispers softly in my ear. Robbie puts me down and I stare deeply into his eyes.
“You really think so? How was my singing?”
“Never gets old.” He smiles, pecking me on the cheek once more.
