The bell rings to signal the end of fifth period. Crap. Passing period.
I slowly assemble my things into a neat stack and walk vigilantly out the door of English, peering left and right before leaving like a safe driver would do their first time driving. I crouch down as I speed walk through the halls, trying to blend in as best I can.
Maybe she won’t see me today and I can go one day without being bullied. That would be nice. She would always do it in passing period when I am on my way to Calculus. Maybe she’s sick…
“Oh, Emerald!” Trinity chimes from behind me, “Come out, Em. We know you’re up there.”
I slowly turn around to see Trinity and her little entourage of populars, all in stupid positions, trying to stick out their butts. As if they weren’t already super noticeable in their Victoria Secret Leggings. They chewed obnoxiously on their gum, staring at me like I was some sort of monster.
“Hello, Emerald. Or should I say Useless-Piece-Of-Junk-Who-Should-Have-Never-Been-Born.” She snickers, thinking it’s funny. Her friends pipe in, being the little shadows that they are.
“Trinity, just stop. You’re being a jerk and you know it.” I murmur. Oh, God. What did I just say?
“Excuse me?” Trinity snarls in disbelief. She slams me into a nearby locker, her face inches from mine, “Would you like to change your answer?”
“Nope,” I reply, lifting my head high. It was time to show her I’m not weak, “You are a selfish jerk who cares about nobody except yourself and thinks it’s amusing to bully girls who aren’t as popular as you.”
Trinity’s face twists in utter rage and she strikes a hard blow to my eye. I crumple to the floor and put my hand up to hold it. Salty tears stream down my face as I sob pitifully on the tile floor of the school hallway.
“Hey, what the heck are you doing?” I hear a British voice say from behind me.
“Oh, hey Robbie, I was just…uh…helping this girl up. Yeah. She fell and hit her eye on the locker and—“
“Really? You expect me to believe that? I’m not an idiot, Trinity.”
“No! I never said you were—“
“Just shut up. We’re through.” He says. I hear a couple pairs of sneakers sprinting down the hallway and assume it’s Trinity having one of her little ‘tantrums’.
“Sorry about that.” The boy says, offering his hand to help me up. I gladly take it and notice his attractive features through my one working eye. The other was swollen shut.
“Oh my God! Are you alright? We should go to the nurse.” He says frantically, now realizing the extent of the wound.
I nod. I couldn’t go to class like this. The period has probably commenced by now. I couldn’t just go in and brush it off saying, ‘Ya, I fell. No biggy’.
Robbie takes my hand and walks with me to the nurse’s office.
“Sorry again about Trinity. I had no idea she did this. I’m completely mortified.”
I smile at him. Dang, this boy was so charming.
“It’s okay. It’s not your fault.”
“I know. But if I had known sooner and stopped it this wouldn’t have happened.” He says, pointing to my eye. I don’t think even I wanted to see what it looked like.
“Robbie, it’s fine. Don’t worry about it.” I say as we reach the door to the nurse’s office.
“Thanks, Robbie.” I say before entering.
“No problem. I never caught your name?”
“Emerald. But you can call me Em.” I smile sheepishly, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
“Well, see you around, Em.” He says, giving me a little wave before walking down the hall to his class.
