"Robbie, can you please tell me where we’re going?" I beg my boyfriend.
Robbie told me he had a surprise for me for our two-month anniversary of us being a couple, and I couldn't take it any longer; I hate surprises. Not knowing the upcoming future drives me absolutely insane.
"I told you, Rachel, it's a surprise. Now be patient. We're almost there."
I slump lower in my seat with a big 'oomf'. Outside the streets of Houston were bustling with life. All sorts of people walked past, actually beating us due to the traffic. One businessman was chatting with a really pretty girl at a cafe. A little kid walking his golden retriever puppy had stumbled and fallen, now crying on the ground and holding his knee. It was weird how sometimes the most crazy and noisy areas seem so peaceful and serene all at the same time.
Robbie pulls into a parking lot at the theater. Wait...the theater?
"Tada!" Robbie's chimes, pulling two play tickets out from his shorts. I squeal in delight and grab one to see which production we were going to see.
"Robbie! Phantom of the Opera?! That is my absolute favorite!" I say, giving him the best hug I could in our crammed car.
"I know, that's why I got them. Happy two-month anniversary, love," He says endearingly, giving me a small peck on the cheek before getting out of the car. He comes over to my side and opens the door for me.
"Such a gentleman." I tease.
Robbie sticks his tongue out playfully and we head to the main entrance of the theater.
"Hello, are you buying tickets or do you have them preordered?" A lady l says in a monotone voice. It was completely obvious she wore a fake smile.
"Preordered." Says Robbie.
"Okay, you're going to take a left over there and that should lead you to your seats. Just find your row and sit in your assigned seat number."
"Thank you." Robbie nods.
"Oooo! Robbie can we get some Sour Patch Kids?" I ask as we pass the concession stand.
"Of course, love." Robbie smiles.
We get in line and not even thirty seconds later the two teenage girls in front of us turn around. They both go wide-eyed and jump up and down in excitement.
"Oh my God! Are you Robbie Kay? We are, like, your biggest fans!" The brunette says. At this point bystanders were turning around to see the two girls drooling over Robbie, my boyfriend. Could this line go any faster?
"Um, yup, that's me." Robbie groans, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Oh my god! Your British accent! It's even cuter in person! Can we take a picture with you?" The other asks.
They both hand their iPhones to me and Robbie gets into position, squished in the middle with the girls to his sides. He plasters a fake, irritated smile on his face. It takes all the strength I can muster not to burst out laughing. I take multiple pictures on each of the girls' phones before it’s their turn to buy food. They give Robbie one last hug before ordering.
"Jeesh. Sorry about that, love." Robbie apologizes.
"It's ok. That was quite funny, actually." I giggle.
"Oh, shut up, Rachel." Robbie smirks.
When it is our turn in line, I get my Sour Patch Kids and Robbie gets lemonade for us to share. We head over to the theater and find our seats. The theater was dim, signaling that the play was about to start.
“I’m so excited!” I squeal, bouncing in my seat slightly.
“Me too.” Robbie grins.
The lights finally go out and the production starts.
The play is all about Christine Daae. She was brought up in the Paris Opera house when her famous musician father suddenly dies, telling her he will send her and angel of music to look after her. Christine grows up and discovers that she is hearing a voice, telling her and teaching her to sing. She believes he is the angel of music but in fact he is a disfigured genius, the Phantom.
The Phantom starts to get feelings for Christine, and although she is fascinated and drawn towards the phantom, she falls in love with her childhood sweetheart, Raoul. The Phantom gets madly jealous, kidnaps Christine, and threatens to kill Raoul. She, to save Raoul, agrees to marry the phantom and kisses him. He then realizes what he's done and then makes Christine go with Raoul, disappearing forever.
By the time the play was finished, I stood up, giving it a standing ovation. The play was perfectly produced, better than any past productions I have seen. Robbie stands up beside me, looking over to me to see tears in my eyes; the play was that good. The whole story was just so heartfelt it was hard not to be touched.
“Are you crying?” Robbie asks, sounding amused.
“Are you not crying?” I giggle, wiping away my eyes. I look at my fingers to see my mascara smeared all over them. Crap.
“Umm…you got a little something right there,” Robbie says, wiping under my eyes, “There. All better.”
I smile and we walk out of the theater and back to Robbie’s car.
