Despite the cars size it cruised along at high speeds down the road, buildings flying by. I was half afraid to look at the speedometer but I also had this feeling he could drive faster and we would still be safe. I didn't know where we were going and I didn't care. I was heading out for a night where my mother didn't matter, the local gang wars weren't an issue and my lack of cash didn't matter. I let out a small contented sigh and saw him glance over at me, golden eyes flashing in the setting sun.
"What was that for?"
"Just, happy to get away."
"And if I had not intentions of returning you, would you still be happy?"
I shivered as I saw him flash his toothy grin my way and at the small threat hidden in his words. The fact that he had said that didn't frighten me, the fact that I wanted to say 'no, take me away' was what frightened me. I had only spoken to this man once and here I was in his car, driving who knows where and ready to toss everything away to be by his side. My level of attraction to him scared me.
"So why did you talk to me last night?"
"Hmm?" He was distracted as we turned off the highway and headed towards the water front, the sun just an orange line on the horizon.
I repeated the question and he grinned over at me, this time his eyes looked over my body and I felt myself heat up under his gaze.
"I thought you were interesting, different. There is something about you Nagisa, something I can't put my finger on. I wanted to get to know you better."
I ducked my head to hide my flaming cheeks and after a while we pulled to a stop outside of a restaurant on the water. He jumped out and within moments was beside me door. He held out his hand to help me down. I tried to do it gracefully but stumbled. His arm went around my waist to steady me, our bodies pressed tightly together. I tried to move but the truck was against my back as he pressed his body against mine. Shivers ran down my back when I felt his breath tickle beneath my ear. I bit my lip to stop from gasping as he ran his nose along my jaw line.
"Yes, you are very interesting."
He moved away and I sagged against the truck. Chuckling he reached out and grabbed my hand, pulling me along into the restraint. He gave his name to the host who led us to a secluded area on the balcony. Not many diners were out here, they were all inside where it was warmer. The wind wasn't too bad now, it was quite crisp and refreshing but I knew once night fell it would get cold quickly.
A waitress arrived and Karma began to order our food and a bottle or red wine. I was glad he had taken charge, I had simply taken one glance at the menu, seen the prices and closed it with a snap. The cost of a salad could buy me groceries for a week. When the man moved away to grab our drinks I leaned forward and hissed.
"I can't afford this place Karma."
My cheeks heated up with embarrassment and I looked down, not wanting to see pity in his eyes. His hand moved over to rest on mine.
"Don't worry your pretty little head about it. I told you it was my treat. With my work I can afford it."
I sat back and looked up to meet his gaze, glad there wasn't a trace of pity in them otherwise I might have walked out. I didn't move my hand from his.
"What do you do for work?"
"Oh, this and that. I work in HR, a help companies manage their costs."
"You mean you fire people?"
"I get rid of what needs to be axed."
There was a sparkle in his eyes as he said that, as if he was sharing some great joke that I didn't understand. I could tell he was telling the truth, not the whole truth but one version of it. I tried to picture him sitting in a suit behind a desk but it just looked strange.
