At first Elijah did not know that it has been 5 years. In the mental chamber he and his siblings stayed in to survive their bites and curses, he lost track of time. He couldn't tell if time ran or if it was insufferable slow.
In his thousand years of lifetime, it happened often to him. Time lost its value for him. Lifetimes flew away, people he cared for died of old age while he stayed his young, strong self. At some point, he simply stopped caring. Desperately he tried to cut the boundaries to the human world, although he had sworn to himself that he would never loose his humanity. Elijah's reputation of the noble man was held up by his try to keep the balance between the man and the beast. Sometimes he forgot what it was like to be a human, to always be on this small line between life and death.
He remembered how he sat at a Parisienne cafe and watched the people pace around the streets. Some were in a hurry, some just slowly walked by, smiling, talking with their friends. Elijah envied all of them for their mortality. They lived for the moment, because every moment could be the last. That part of redemption was lost for him. He could sit there forever, watch how they all would grow old and die. See their children doing it all over again.
Still, he didn't want to die. He had a task, a task that sometimes seemed not fulfillable. To keep his family safe. He knew of a time when he had given up. A time when he followed his own desires. Barely could he remember it. It must have been quite dark times.
5 years ago he was close to accomplish his mission. They defeated their greatest threats, their parents and their wicked aunt that was keen on stealing the families greatest member of value.
Hope.
His niece was the reason time mattered again. This girl was also the reason why he would loose his reason to live. But right now redemption was far away from his reach. The shadows of their existence had them in a tight grasp. They were on the edge of getting killed, no one knew if Hayley could ever find a way to save them all. After a thousand years Elijah could die without seeing a second of happiness for his family. It couldn't end like this.
Hayley.
If they somehow got out of this miserable state, fight Marcel and find his brother, Elijah knew that she would be his reason to live. He could build a happy life with her, live in peace. If that was even possible for a Mikaelson.
This is was our family's hope.
Memories of the last eventful years streamed through his head in flashes. He closed his eyes for a second and when he reopened them, the peaceful white house with the fancy garden and his siblings has disappeared. But still he felt something new. He felt whole again, he had the connection to his body back. His muscles twitched and he clenched his hands in fists to test if this was real or just a dream.
I let her in. I don't let people in.
Finally he would be free again. Free to safe his family again, free to achieve their redemption once and for all.
Elijah sat up in his coffin and looked around. The stock room around him was completely empty. He could see a circle with a runic sign, he expected it to be a work of witch. Maybe Freya had already been freed before him to cure her siblings. But when he took another look to his side, he saw that the other coffins were still closed.
He climbed out of the coffin and walked up to the one's of his siblings. But before he could open the lid of Rebekah's coffin, he heard screaming noises from outside the warehouse. There was a fight out their and he expected a certain hybrid to need a hand in this.
The vampire rushed outside, still feeling a bit wobbly in his legs. But with every step he felt the power rushing back into his veins. When he reached the door, the noise had suddenly felt silent. Bodies covered the floor, all of them slaughtered bloodily. Just a female figure was still breathing. She leaned on a parked car, her back facing him. Between all this blood, she almost looked clean.
He walked closer to her, noticing that she must've cut her hair. It was quite shorter, the tips nearly touching her shoulders. The Original wondered what would also have changed about her.
Elijah placed a hand on her shoulder and whispered lightly smiling.
"Hayley..."
She turned around, Elijah awaiting the lovely face of his lover. But when he didn't see what he expected, every emotion on Elijah's face turned into shock.
"Ouch. It's not nice to mistake a woman for another girl."
This definitely wasn't the woman he loved. He was utterly confused, drawing his hand back slowly. As the realization hit him, he looked at her with anger in his eyes, seeing only red for a moment.
"Who are you? What have you done to Hayley?"
Elijah looked around the corpses to see if Hayley was among them. The girl put her hands up and grinned.
"Sorry to disappoint you, but there's no Hayley around this place. I'm Amelia, my pleasure."
She wanted to shake his hand, but Elijah didn't move.
"Wow, and I heard you were the noble one. Must've mistaken you with another sibling."
Elijah just shook his head, not believing her. He grabbed her neck and tried to compel her.
"Tell me where she is."
Instead of showing any fear to the much stronger vampire in front of her, she just rolled her eyes.
"Darling, that won't work on me. But I can tell you without compulsion, the girl you're looking for isn't here."
Elijah released her of his grab and watched the bruises on her neck quickly heal. She was without doubt a vampire.
"Well, then enlighten me who else might have cured me?"
He growled through his teeth. Elijah felt that she was up to no good. She radiated off danger.
"Me."
Amelia gave him a cheery smile as if this was the most normal thing in the world. Confusion was written over Elijah's face again. He looked at her intensely. Her face was oddly familiar but he couldn't point out where he could've seen that girl in his past.
"Why would you? I don't even know you."
She chuckled and started to pace around the backyard. Elijah suddenly grabbed her arm to stop her and make her focus on his questions.
"Let's say you don't remember me. The other question is a thing to discuss over a strong tea."
The Original grunted in disapproval. If she wasn't a girl, he would've hit her for joking manner about such a topic of importance.
"I don't have time for you playing mysterious. I need you to wake my siblings."
"Don't worry it's taken care of. They are cured as we speak."
Elijah turned on his heel to go back inside and see if she was telling the truth, but suddenly Amelia appeared in front of him and blew a special powder into his face. He passed out and fell backwards on the floor.
"Such a hurry, but so many things to discuss. But that way I have all the civilized tea for myself."
She smiled widely and stepped over Elijah's unconscious body.
