"Get your belongings. I want to leave this crap city as soon as I can."

All eyes were on Amelia. The was only one expression in their faces: shock. Amelia herself kept her gaze down, feeling an explosive mixture of anger and sadness rising inside her. She couldn't look any of them in the eyes. Somehow she felt as if she was betraying them, though she knew she saved Elijah and Hope with her choice.

The heretic walked out of the room, crashing her shoulder hard against Lucifer who just chuckled as he followed her.

Quickly she began to rip some clothes out of her closet and putting them into her suitcase, trying to keep the tears from falling. Lucifer and Elijah stood in the room and watched her. They couldn't be more different while looking exactly the same. While Elijah wore his usual suit, Lucifer wore a loose dark T-shirt and jeans, which surprised Amelia. But what differed most were their expressions. The devil had a smug smile on his face, but Elijah seemed almost horrified. He didn't know what to do or how to stop this, a feeling which was alien to him.

"Could you two please go somewhere else, you're giving me a headache."

Lucifer again laughed, but followed her wish and went out. Elijah just sighed and stepped closer to his wife.

"Amelia, you don't have to do this..."

She couldn't hold back a bitter and hysterical laugh.

"Of course I have to do this! What should I do? Let you die or let a little girl be a slave to the devil? It's the only option, Elijah!"

The tears pooled over. In the last week she cried more than in her whole thousand years of lifetime. She sobbed and Elijah tried to pull her closer to him but she punched his chest weakly.

"Let go of me!"

She tried to push him away from him, but he just wrapped his arms around her tightly.

"No."

Suddenly she gave up the struggle and just leaned onto him and buried her face in his chest. Her tears left wet spots in the soft fabric of his shirt.

They stayed like that until Amelia's tears had dried off.

"Promise me that you won't look for me. Please, take care of your family."

Elijah cupped her cheeks with his hands and forced her to look at him.

"Amelia, you are my family. Plus, I don't make promises I can't keep."

His lips stroked past hers and both of them closed their eyes to enjoy the last moments together.

"He'll kill you..."

"You haven't given up on me, so I won't give up on you. We'll find a way, Amelia. That's what I promise you."

He moved her hand to his mouth and placed a kiss on her wedding ring.

"That's what we promised to each other, 'to stay by your side fully and fearlessly', do you remember?"

A sad smile came across her face. She looked down to their connected hands.

"I'll always remember, Elijah."

Amelia kissed his soft lips for one last time, before she grabbed her suitcase and went out of the compound. One last time she glanced over her shoulder to see Elijah standing on the balcony, having an unreadable expression.

On the inside he had only one thought: He would get his wife back. Whatever it takes.

...

Months had passed since Amelia and Lucifer had left New Orleans. Since then, Amelia's life had gotten dull and grey. Being away from her husband made her feel physical pain, as if every inch of her body just wanted to run away from this and seek protection in Elijah's arms. It was pathetic, because of course, she couldn't do that.
