Adrian

"Adrian, it's getting dark. I really think we should get going."

"But which way?" I laughed, wrapping my arm around Mara's shaking shoulders. "We're in the middle of the maze! The only way we can go is forwards!"

Mara held on to my loosely draped arm. She leaned in closely, and I could feel her minty breath on my neck. Her short, bright blue pixie cut brushed against my chest as she looked up to me. It was cute how small she was. She fit perfectly into everything.

"Fine," Mara relented, giggling, sneaking a kiss onto my chest. "But I get to choose which movies to binge-watch after this."

I pulled her closer, breathing in her fresh scent. I had everything I could ever ask for. An incredibly rich family, a beautiful girlfriend, and the looks of a well structured Greek god.

"Right turn or left?" I whispered, pecking Mara's soft cheek.

"Right," she replied, smiling. Her perfectly white teeth glistened in the moon light. We brushed past the thorn bushes, me shielding Mara with my arms, into another route.

Everything was perfect. Her piercing, blue eyes glinted pure happiness. And I wanted to stay in the moment forever.

And then there was a shriek.

Mara heard it first. Her blissful eyes narrowed into fear as she twisted her hips to the direction of the sound. "We need to get out," she said in a shaking voice.

I shook my head and grabbed her hand tightly. "Mara -- we need to help! This person is obviously in danger!"

Mara looked at me and shook her head slowly. She turned around towards the place we left, the closest exit.

"I don't think we can," she whispered, shuttering. "Besides, it might just be a jump scare or something..."

I looked down at her shaking frame. I wrapped both long arms around her small frame, encasing her in a bear hug.

"If it's a jump scare, then why would we run away?" I asked softly. "Please, Mara. We need to help."

Mara closed the gap between us. She always had that attribute of making sure that there was no empty distance between us. We were inseparable.

"I'm scared," she whispered, burrowing her small head in my chest.

I pat her head, each second seemingly a wasted one. The one who screamed was at risk. I had to save them --

"Be brave for me," I murmured into Mara's small ear. The cold air swayed through our bodies, chilling our bare skeletons. She nodded reluctantly, and we hurried to the scene.

By the time we got there, another scream was emitted. But it wasn't from the previous victim -- it was from Mara.

I clung to her paper-like arms as her eyes crawled behind the sockets. My heart pumped as time slowed down, a torturous shriek haunting me.

A low growl from behind me made me spin around. When I saw what made the noise, Mara's yelps came to a stop.

"There's a kitty," she gasped softly, rushing up to a beast. I stared in confusion, my feet unable to stop her. I wanted to yell at her, to stop her, but I was frozen.

I couldn't move as Mara gleefully stroked the fur of a lion. I couldn't move as she giggled playfully, the lion suggesting she was a pest. I couldn't move as the lion viciously snapped its jaws at her, ready to bite.

And I felt my numb body collide with the coarse ground as it tore Mara's small body apart, shredding her flesh into a jumble of red.

In another body, I could feel myself screaming. It was just me and my dry throat, but I couldn't sense myself.

This couldn't be happening. This is impossible. It's just a dream, it's just a dream, it's just a dream....

Red swarmed my vision as the same colored specks splattered my forehead. In the distance, another soul was present, pushing at my body. But I wasn't there.

I was gone.
