After Will had gone off to the bathroom, it was just me and Nico spectating Mystery Girl's limp body.
"I feel her dying," Nico said after a while, breaking the silence. His depressing aura had spread, and soon I felt myself thinking the same thing. "She's weaker."
But just because I thought what he did didn't mean I wanted to. "Mystery Girl is the strongest person I know," I argued, shifting my eyes from her to the floor. "She can't die. No one like her can just go from a fall like that."
Nico shrugged, and although I wasn't looking directly at him, I could sense him crossing his arms.
"Do you know who Percy Jackson is?" he asked slowly, making sure to pronounce the name clearly.
"Barely."
"Well, he was about the best damned demigod I'd ever met." This time I looked over to Nico to see his cloudy eyes lost in memory. "And who else would he fall in love with besides your little Mystery Girl?"
"So?" I replied, staring at Mystery Girl's hand, wondering how many other hands she's held. "I don't see what this has to do with me. Especially now."
Nico shrugged. "Percy died two years ago," he responded. "My sister -- well, the half-sister, that is -- was devastated. Broken, in fact. It was like someone told you to smash a plate on the ground at fix it with your own two hands."
"How'd she fix it?" I asked.
"She didn't," Nico answered. "She found a distraction -- you."
A distraction?
"But --"
Nico shook his head. "She didn't tell you? It doesn't matter that Percy Jackson is dead. Every day her love for him grows and grows.
"When a little kid breaks a vase from being too reckless, he can't just fix it by himself. He'll use glue and tape and make it look presentable, but it's still not the same.
"Your little Mystery Girl? She doesn't care about anyone. But who could expect her to? After everything before her supposed soulmate's death?"
Just a distraction. Nothing more than that. Even after all that happened between us? Was that just me being a substitute?
"What happened to her before Percy died?" I asked, rubbing my thumb. Really, I didn't want to know. Maybe I would be better off without knowledge of Mystery Girl's past troubles. Then I couldn't blame her for everything. Or could I?
Nico took a deep breath. "I don't know the entire story," he sighed, "but I do know she came from a loving family. Warm, homemade meals everyday after studying hard for school, and a little brother who looked up to her like she was Superwoman."
No ... Mystery Girl said she was a city runaway ... her dad beat her every day and got away with it ... her brother died from leukemia ... fucking raped! ... or was that a lie? Is everything she'd said a lie?
"That's not what she told me," was all I could mutter, incredulous. In some way, I felt betrayed.
To be honest, I didn't tell Mystery Girl everything that happened to me. I left a few details out, but at least I wasn't blatantly lying!
Nico sighed again. "Honestly," he said, looking me in the eye. "Did you really know her?"
I don't even know her name.
