"After all we've done to our faces and our fingers
You can run but you can't hide from this
Some would gasp some would cry as they wheeled us in by gurney
And we'll laugh about the time we fell"

and suddenly it was light again

Adrian was the first person I saw when I finally opened my eyes, and I was just so relieved to be in the 'real' world again.

"You're finally awake," he murmured. His hand reached for mine, and that was when I felt the familiar texture of a cigarette. "I...I missed you."

The moment was still, like none of us knew what to do. We were just soaking up each other's presences.

"I missed you too," I said, my voice slightly coarse. "What happened?"

Adrian shook his head. "You fell off the climbing wall and passed out. Nico and I've been really worried."

Oh, Nico. "Is he okay?" I asked, wincing as pain shot up my arm in an attempt to stretch it. "Where is he, anyway?"

"The bathroom," Adrian answered, "or maybe he's trying to eat Will's face with a tongue."

That seemed reasonable enough, and I never really got to know which of the two options was true, because Nico had walked into the room holding Will's hand in that exact moment.

"You're awake!" he exclaimed, immediately leaving his boyfriend to collapse onto the side of the cot.

His weight pressed too far and too hard into me, and I could barely mutter an "ow" before he knew he should move farther. As I rubbed my sore ribs, Nico's childish eyes gleamed at me. With him like that, I felt invincible. I was an older sister -- I could do anything. I felt powerful.

Adrian seemed to take on a darker aura, and clung to my hand in silence. When he finally decided to talk, Will had already left to go get more medicine and Nico made himself comfortable sleeping curled up at the foot of the cot.

"Are you still in love with Percy Jackson?" Adrian asked slowly, refusing to look at me. His grip on me loosened, and it was slightly disheartening considering I would have left Percy for this.

Nevertheless, I loved him. Yes, I loved Adrian James and I'd save the world four times for him. (And the world too. And me? I now realize that's a bad example.)

I took a deep breath, sighing, "Well, yeah. I don't think I'll ever stop loving him. He was -- he saved my life." I rubbed my thumb against Adrian's hand. "It's not like I'm cheating on any of you. Shit happens. That's why there's the term 'ex'."

Adrian nodded slowly, and although he was sitting against the opposing cot so I had to really sit up to see him, I could tell he was relaxing despite seeming to have another question.

"I'm not using you as a distraction, if that's what you're thinking," I added, chewing the inside of my cheek. "I love you, Adrian. You broke through every last barrier, leaving me naked and bare. You caught me by surprise, and I fell for you when I last expected to fall for anyone, much less a stranger."

When Adrian replied, he took his time. But the way he looked up to me with his blue, blue eyes made up for all of it.

"I love you too, Mystery Girl."
