Chapter 5...
Unfortunately luck was not on my side the following week, I ended up missing 3 days of practice and by Friday I had to admit to defeat. Danny was sitting next to me, laughing at the look on my face as we waited for Mr Taylor to appear as he usually did at 8 o clock.
'I can't believe I have to resort to this.' I moaned to Danny. 'You know he's going to make my life a living hell right?'
'Oh come on Rhy, it's not going to be that bad.'
'Yea maybe not, but he's definitely going to be walking about wearing that smug look on his face 24/7. I'm not going to hear the end of this.' I complained sliding down further in my seat.
'Well, I'm sorry to say but you're going to have to suck it up, or you're going to be missing a hell of a lot more swimming.' He chuckled at my discomfort.
'Why can't he just watch me? I mean he is here every day anyway, why do I have to join the stupid team.' I knew I was been childish but I didn't want to have to give up my freedom to do something I could already do on my own. 'Argh I hate my Dad!'
'No you don't.' He laughed.
'What are you two still doing here?' Mr Taylor asked ten minutes later as he came out from the back.
Danny gave me a nudge and prompted me to speak, but I was struck dumb by the god standing in nothing but board shorts in front of me.
'Rhylee? Get on with it!' Danny whispered nudging me again.
'I have to talk to you!' I mumbled quickly
'Sorry what was that, I couldn't quite make out what you said.' He smirked.
'I said I have to talk to you!' I said loud this time.
'Oh yeah, what about?' I could see he was enjoying my discomfort profoundly as he stood there waiting for me.
'About swimming...here...in the morning,' I took a deep breath and continue. 'And about you supervising me.' I rushed out.
'Oh so you would like to join the team?' he was taunting me now and loving it.
'No, I just want you to supervise my sessions in the morning.' I knew this wasn't part of the deal but I had to try. 'Seeing as you're here every day anyway.'
'Yeah but I have things to do every day hence why I'm here. I don't have time to just sit and watch some girl swim up and down all day.'
'Oh come on you sit on the grand stand almost every day anyway so what difference would it make if you continued?' Ok so I was pushing my luck and Danny gave me a funny look at the mention of him sitting around every other day when Danny wasn't around.
'Look, I'm a coach that's what I do, and I sat there only to make sure that you were ok after the almost drowning session you had, and because I didn't think Sydney or any of your other girls friend would react quick enough if something went wrong. But your boyfriend here is more than capable of looking out for you so I got on with my work.' I felt the colour rush to my cheeks and turned to look at Danny who was smiling from ear to ear. Rolling my eyes I turned back to Mr Taylor.
'I don't want to be on the team, I just want to swim, for me.' I pleaded with him.
Sighing he gazed back at me for a minute. 'Look I'm a coach at a high school, I can't spend an hour everyday watching a girl swim in a pool. It would look wrong. But if I was your coach and I was training you then I would just be doing my job and you get to swim. I don't see the problem with joining the team, if swimming is something you love.'
