Chapter 25...
I woke to sound of snoring to my left and a light weight resting over my stomach. Prying my eyes open I slowly gained focus of my surroundings. Luke lay with his head on the bed, arm flung over my stomach holding my hand on the other side. God awful pink walls surrounded me, with a few pieces of ancient furniture scattered around the room. My Dad was asleep in the arm chair, feet up on my bedside table, head flung back against the back of the chair, and there in was the source of the snoring.
Most people suddenly remember the traumatic event all of a sudden, but I was completely aware of my situation from the minute I woke up. The constant dull ache in my leg was an instant reminder. As my eyes followed the path of my body down to my slightly raised and cushioned leg, I was struck by the moment, if it had been any other situation and I wasn't in hospital, this would have been quite comical. Luke and Dad both passed out in the same room, me with my legs up in the air, well leg but you get the point, and a seriously numb arse.
I shifted my weight slightly and Luke immediately sat up.
'Hey!' I smiled weakly at him.
'Hey beautiful!' He relied squeezing my hand gently.
'How long was I out?'
'Just since yesterday.'
'And?' I pushed.
'Well, you had surgery on your leg last night.'
'And?'
'Well they fixed it.' He grinned.
'Luke?' I moaned.
'What I don't know, the damn doctor won't tell me shit.' I could hear the frustration in his voice, he knew it was bad and I knew it was bad. But I think for Luke in his manly protective mode, this whole situation was killing him because he couldn't help me.
My Dad chose that moment to wake up from his snoring slumber.
'Oh sweetheart you're awake, how are you feeling?' He asked getting up and moving over to my side. He glanced briefly at Luke's pacing form before focusing on me.
'They got me all drugged up Dad, I feel great.' I forced out a tired smile to reassure him. Whether he believed it or not, he smiled back at me before standing up straight and stretching out his back.
'They really should put fold out chairs in these rooms.' He complained as his back clicked back into place.
'I don't think you're supposed to have overnight guests Dad.' I joked.
'Whatever, there is no way I'm leaving my little girl in this place on her own, and Luke refused to go so I had to too.' That made me laugh, typical.
'Ah, she's awake and laughing that's a good sign.' A man in a white coat said stepping into the room.
'Morning Doctor.' My Dad replied.
'Morning.' The doctor answered nodding in his direction.
'So what the verdict Doc?' I rushed out.
'Well, you have a ruptured calf.' My gasp cut him off and he looked at me confused. 'You're going to be fine Rhylee, in a few months you'll be up and running around with no problem.' From the look on his face he thought this was fabulous news.
