He stood waiting for hours. His eyes were fixed on the door to Sofia's room, which had been locked as they worked to save her. His foot tapped impatiently. Flames kept shooting up his arms in spastic, burning bursts, but he hardly noticed.
Sofia was hurt... and he'd turned dark. He'd killed dozens men and women because he was mad that Sofia was hurt. Because she was in pain, he gave pain to people who hadn't even caused it.
Grainger had turned into the one person he'd never wanted to be. He was acting like Anna.
The thought sent a shiver down his spine. Anna and everything she'd done horrified him. To wonder... what if he ended up like her? What if he turned against his own family, like Emperor Turner? What if, like Malice, he did something indescribable in his horror? It had terrified him when she destroyed Tempolia. What if he did something like that?
The clock ticked on. Nobody came to tell him anything about his wife.
What if she died? He immediately shook off that thought, but couldn't shake off the feeling that Genosis had been reduced to nothing but a graveyard.
He glanced at the door again, then all around himself. There was no one watching.
Making up his mind, Grainger shoved open the door and stepped inside.
Sofia lay on the bed, her chest rising and falling shallowly. Grainger swallowed hard.
I did this.
All the blood had been cleaned off her face and body, but her skin was pale and sallow, with purple bruises under her eyes. A long, red cut ran down the left side of her face, intercepting her eye. Her hands were badly burned, and her knee seemed warped.
I did this.
"Sir!" Grainger whipped around to see a medic standing there, looking affronted. "You can't be in here!"
"S-sorry," Grainger stuttered. "I just... wanted to see my wife..."
"Your wife needs peace and isolation to heal," the medic said sternly, pointing to the door. "Out."
"Ok, but before I go... what will be left, once this is over?"
The medic sighed. "Sir, I-" he hesitated. "Well, I suppose I could tell you," he decided, more to himself than Grainger. He steadied his gaze on the Emperor. "She will have a limp for the rest of her life," he began frankly. "Her days as a warrior are over, I'm afraid. There's also-" he paused and took a deep breath. "There's a high chance she will be blind," he said calmly.
"What?" Grainger shrieked. "She can't- I..." he backed away. "I have to go," he said in a small voice.
Then he ran.
He waited another eternity.
