Adam's P.O.V

"... Our parents died in a house fire when I was twelve. I got out unharmed but my brother Marc, he was only ten. I still remember him slipping out of my grasp and running back towards the house for our parents. A section of the burning ceiling collapsed on him," I listened intently to Charlie's story as I ate food from the tray in front of me. "The worst of it caught his side so he has these horrible, twisted scars. None of it was helped but out foster parents Tom and Cori. They made it so clear we weren't wanted, It's kind of what started all of this." He gestured around at the prison cafeteria.

"Our friends Theo and Ryder have a similar story," Jace commented, his mouth overflowing with mash potato. He was about to continue when I glared him down. From then until we'd finished eating he refused to meet my mismatched eyes.

I had been out of solitary for a day and thus far no one had given me much trouble, some of our other inmates had even joined us at out table. People seemed to trail me with their eyes, watching me, waiting to see if I'd do anything else to disrupt the natural order. I had tried to keep my head low and had so far managed to keep a low profile. That was at least until a gruff voice spoke from behind me.

"Oi faggot." My blood boiled as I turned around to see Jax flanked by 2 of his cronies. I took some pleasure in seeing the inky black bruises covering his body.

"What?" I asked coolly, raising an eyebrow.

"You're about to pay for what you did," Jax said cracking his knuckles. "From now on you better be sleeping with one eye open. Ain't nobody gonna protect you." He drew his finger across his throat menacingly. Instead of showing any side signs of fear I got to my feet, a smirk spreading across my face.

"Adam, sit down." Charlie hissed tugging on my wrist trying in vain to get me to back down from whatever I was about to do. I snatched my wrist away from him taking a step closer to Jax.

"You should listen to your bitch before I break your pretty little face." Jax snarled but before he even knew what was happening I had rushed at him, grabbing him by his collar and slamming him up against the wall. His 2 mates remained motionless watching the events unfold.

"I suggest you listen very closely," I said in a demanding whisper. "You and your little gang better steer clear of me and everyone who associates with me," I was speaking slowly and clearly for effect. "If you so much as look at one of my people I will beat you so hard that the guards will have to mop what's left of you up off the floor. Got it?" Jax didn't make a noise so I tightened my grip on his collar at which he flinched away before saying:

"Yes." He nodded quickly; Satisfied I stepped away allowing Jax to rush away followed closely with his friends. It took me a while to register the silence that had fallen upon the canteen, all attention had been fixed on me and Jax.

"What are you cunts looking at?" I shouted out to the room before I strode quickly back over to my seat. Charlie and Jace along with several others were staring at me in disbelief as I retook my seat.

"Have you got a death wish or something mate? 'Cause you're going to get yourself killed." Charlie said into my ear after a few moments of silence.

"Jax won't be bothering us anymore," I muttered getting to my feet once again, lunchtime having come to an end. The others were hot on my heels falling into a natural order behind me.

"How can you be sure he won't come near you?" Jace asked as we dumped our trays off and turned to head outside. Jace hurried to stay by my side as I pushed my way through a door and into the bright light.

"Let's just say the picture of the consequences I painted him were enough to give even Hades nightmares," I replied leading the way over to the bleachers that sat to the right side of the yard. The fresh air compared favorably to the stuffy canteen we'd just left behind and the sound of cheerful chatter rose from the boys trailing behind me. Upon reaching the faded bleachers Charlie, Jace, and the others spread out forming little clusters of two or three. I sat slightly to one side and leaned back, closing my eyes. I let the cool breeze ruffled my hair as I listened to Charlie tell Jace about a girl, Sam, he'd fancied back in middle school. In no time I had zoned out and found myself begging for some excitement.
