~Chapter 14~
October 19th, 2012
25 days until total Solar Eclipse
*Shade's POV*
I floated above Erizel slowly, feeling the suns warmth against my back as dawn slowly broke. She looked so peaceful, sitting and meditating.
I needed to talk to her but I couldn't bring myself to break her concentration. All of a sudden I saw her head jerk up toward the sky, her eyes open, but not seeming to see. I quickly flew a bit away, hiding behind a tree.
I felt guilty for spying on her, though I don't know why. I could see her lips moving from my vantage point but I couldn't hear the words coming out of her mouth.
And then she started to glow.
*Erizel's POV*
I started chanting slowly, staring up at the sky.
"The night is bright, the day is dark, here me call and leave my mark.
The world is yours, the heaves are mine, and all that's good and evil is fine.
I can hear you whispering in my ear.
Yet still I do not fear.
My will is eternal, my power is strong.
My life will be very long.
I am entitled to my birthright, sealed within me.
And now I call it for all to see!"
I gasped loudly as a beam of light and shadows swirled around me, drawing me to my feet. My eyes were locked upward to the sky.
Suddenly the beam was gone and I collapsed on the floor.
"I've done it..." I whispered.
*Shade's POV*
"Holy crap" I whispered. I had no idea what just happened.
"Erizel!" I shouted, dropping down to the ground next to her and catching her right before she fell over.
"Are you okay? What just happened?" I asked franticly.
"Shade?" she asked confused, "What are you doing here?"
"Never mind that, what did you just do? What just happened?" I questioned.
"I uhm... I did something bad." She said as her eyes slid closed.
"What? What did you do?" I needed to know.
"I took back what was rightfully mine." She said firmly.
"What do you mean rightfully yours?"
"I took back my power, the power my parents took from me when I was born and sealed away. I took it back."
"What does that mean?" I wondered.
"It means that I just pissed off the wrong people."
"Why did you do it then?"
"I needed to. I need the power. I can just tell." She said as she looked up at the sky.
"Wait, so it's only one power?" I asked, confused.
"Yes, it's just a single ability." She told me before passing out.
"Erizel? Erizel!" I shook her lightly.
I guess whatever she had just done had exhausted her completely.
"Erizel... I hope whatever you did won't come back to bite us in the butt. I don't know what I would do if something happened to you," I whispered quietly as I leaned over and kissed her cheek.
"Don't worry... I'll take you some place safe." I stated as I stood, her in my arms.
I looked into the forest and started walking.
~~
I pressed my hand on the tree and watched the outline of the door form before sliding open on its own.
"Mmmm," Erizel moaned in my arms, "Where are we?"
"Some place safe, don't worry." I said as I carried her into the tree's base and jumped down the hole, into the darkness below the earth.
"Tell me where we are, please?" She begged me.
"We're in my home, well part of it anyway. Whenever I come to the Earthly plain I live in a system of tunnels under the Earth's crust, and this is just one of many." I explained.
"Why are we here? Why didn't you just take me back to the house?" She asked.
"I uh... I don't know, I didn't think of it?"
"That's not true!" She accused.
"Well fine, I needed you to be somewhere safe and I wasn't ready to share you with Ember and Gabriel just yet!" I admitted.
She just stared at me silently, not saying anything.
"Well say something why don't you?" I practically begged her, "Please, anything!"
"You... you do care, don't you?" She looked at me in shock.
"Of course I do! I found you in the forest as a child and it was my mission to capture you and bring you back but instead of suffered years of Lucy's punishments to stay by you! You're funny, and sweet! You're strong and confident! You're the most beautiful person I've ever laid eyes on. How could I not care? How could I?" I said in a gasp.
"I... I thought you hated me!" She cried.
"I don't hate you!" I said, grabbing her face in my hands, "I love you."
I kissed her hard.
"I... I love you..." I said again.
"I... I..." Erizel stuttered out.
She couldn't say it. She couldn't say anything. It was in that instant that I knew that no matter how much I loved her, no matter what I did for her, no matter what I said, she would never feel anything.
I told her how I really felt and she couldn't even care about me enough to say she was sorry and that she didn't feel the same way. The look on her face told me everything, she was disgusted by me, and she hated me.
And she had every right to. I'm a monster; I'll always be a monster.
And she deserves better; she deserves the best, something I will never be able to give to her.
"... I knew it, you still hate me. I shouldn't have said anything. Forget it, I'm sorry." I said, running deeper into the tunnels.
I ran and ran until I couldn't sense her behind me, until I felt completely alone, which was exactly how I should be. It's what I deserve. Nothing.
I leaned against a cold, hard wall and slowly slid to the ground, wrapping my arms around my head.
"Just forget it, forget me..." I whispered to myself, "I'm nothing, I'm evil, and I'm worthless."
