Military Talk

So, we cut to the military headquarters of Ba Sing Se. Katara and I had a hike to make it to the general's war room on time. On the top floor of the headquarters, an enormous open chamber served as the war room. The centre of the ornate room was dominated by a map of the world almost. Katara knelt at the raised frame of the map with Momo perched on her shoulder while I stood more towards the back. A bunch of older brute looking men in robes were seated at a long table overlooking it.

"General Fong's base will serve as the launching point of the attack," some general stated grimly.

"Isn't he the one who tried to force Aang into the Avatar state a while back?" I asked Katara under my breath.

She nodded while the others ignored me.

"In exactly two months, the Army and Navy will invade the Fire Nation on The Day of Black Sun," General Whats-his-bucket continued, pushing a few painted rock nuggets into position on the map.

Momo jumped at the nuggets, scattering them and toppling the one representing the Fire Nation Capital.

"Or we could send in Momo to do some damage," Katara tried a joke as I plucked Momo from the chaos.

"Cause the..." she continued to laugh, then noticed the grim expressions of the Council "...sorry."

With a gesture, General 'That Guy' snapped the pieces upright. A startled Momo shrieked and darted from my hands to perch on Katara's shoulder once more.

"All we need is the Earth King's seal in order to execute the plan," he placed a scroll on a section of the map frame, which he bent across to Katara and me.

"I'll get these scrolls to him right away," Katara said respectfully. "Thank you, General How."

'So that's his name,' I thought as she picked up the scroll and bowed slightly before turning to depart.

"Hang on," I raised a hand. "I thought we were here to speak of the details of the plan. We already know all that, but we need to organize details like how many troops will we have at our disposal? How will we get all the troops over there? Will we mount a distraction invasion on another area of the empire to draw away their main force?"

One of the generals hushed me with a raised hand of his own. "You let us old men ponder that, little girl," he grumbled. "You focus on running your little errands and looking pretty."

Now, I don't know a lot about Earth Kingdom culture, but where I'm from, people don't speak to me like that. He smirked, and I hated this old man even more.

I don't like the way this guy was talking to me. Just because he was born into a noble class didn't mean he could talk to me however he likes. I know that ain't right.

I narrowed my eyes at him.

"Did you just say something?" I asked coldly.

"I said, 'Run along,' Girl," he pretty much spat the last word at me.

Everything this guy was saying just made me want to smack him one. I could feel myself pulling up my sleeve and a cold fire burning in my stomach.

But then I let reason back into my mind. Was this really worth starting a fight over? Just one of these guys could crush me. I don't want to fight a war. We were already fighting a different war.

Eventually, I thought, 'I don't wanna know', so I let it fade. I may have issues, but I love myself too much to let myself get pounded into the dirt by five mean-looking old men.

I looked over to Katara, who was looking at me desperately from the doorway. Her eyes begging me to shut up and get out. I nodded to her.

"As you wish," I said to the girl, more than the others in the room.

Then I stood and walked.
