Chapter 10

"Violet." I heard my mother whisper as she held me. Her arms were tight around me and I felt her tears falling onto my shoulder. My heart leapt with joy at seeing her again. It had been a full two days since I had seen her.

"I heard about what happened at the school, and I went to check on you, only...you weren't there! And-and t-then no one knew w-whe-where you were, a-and I thought something h-happened to you! Violet, I can't lose you, not after your father..." My mother's words were mixed with her sobs. She continued to cry on my shoulder.

"I missed you too, mum. I'm sorry I left. I really am."

We stayed in that position for a few minutes, standing outside, listening to the breeze. I just held her. I knew that she would be worried, and I did what any daughter would do for her mother. Comfort her.

"Mum, can we go out? Like, do something together, just you and me?" I asked when her sobs had died down.

"I would like that a lot. Where should we go?" She asked, wiping her eyes.

"Uh, shopping?" I asked, knowing that she would like that.

Her eyes lit up when she processed what I had said. She knew I hated shopping, but she never knew why. According to Esme, shopping was the best way to 'connect' with mothers. And anyways, I was going to have a fresh start, might as well dress nicely rather than my normal choice of drab and invisible clothes.

"Really?" She asked in disbelief.

"Yes." I answered surely.

-----------------------

We had been shopping for hours. Literally. It was nearing three o'clock now. I had one more hour with my mother. Right now, we were at a small boutique. Mum had said that since this was our first 'real' shopping experience, she was going to spoil me rotten.

And spoil me she did. We each had five bags in each hand, and we had taken many stops just because our wrists started hurting. But I still couldn't help but find shopping with my mother fun.

The boutique we were in were famous for their beautiful dresses and bags that they sold. Even though I practically begged her not to buy me something from here, she pulled me in here and we were now looking for what my mother called, 'The dress'.

"Oh! Honey, I think I found it!" I heard my mother squeal in excitement. She seriously sounded like teenage girl right now. Turning around, I saw that my mum was holding the most beautiful dress I had ever seen.

It was royal blue and made of bamboo cotton according to the tag. It had a single strap made from cotton flowers and the dress itself went all the way to the floor. It had a sweetheart neckline and the fabric was crossed at the top half of the dress before flowing down to the floor. In it's simplicity, it was beautiful.

"Try it on!" My mum said excitedly.

Nodding, I took the dress and walked to the changing rooms. Closing and locking the door behind me, I quickly changed into the dress., wanting to feel the soft material on me.

I turned to the mirror and gasped. It was beautiful. The flowers trailed up my shoulder, the cross section closely fitting my body. The skirt part of the dress flowed down my legs, touching the tips of my toes. I shyly opened the changing room door, knowing that my mother would be outside waiting for me. I heard a gasp as I stepped out and my mum came over at me, and hand covering her mouth in shock.

"I don't look that bad, do I?" I asked her in amusement.

"Of course not honey! It's just...it's so perfect on you. We have to buy it, no matter the cost!"

She practically dragged me down to the counter as soon as I finished getting changed back into my normal clothes. In the end, the dress had cost $350. I was shocked, but my mum just said, "Consider it an early birthday present", so I left the shop with one more bag in hand.

After a quick stop at Starbucks, my mum and I agreed to spend the rest of the day at home. Of course, we wouldn't be able to do that. My watch read 3:30 already. We arrived at home thirty minutes later. I ran up the stairs to put my clothes on my bed, knowing that packing them away would be  a waste of time seeing as I would have to just take hem away in a matter of minutes.

We sat and talked on the couch for a while. I started to get apprehensive as 4 o'clock seemed to come closer and closer. We talked about everything, and I knew right then and there, that leaving my mum would be the hardest thing I had ever done. I would miss her laugh, and how she scolded my singing every morning, or the smell of pancakes. Getting out of this without tears would be impossible. But, I continued to smile, even when the clock read 3:55, even when the sound of a car parking outside our house could be heard, even when it was time to say goodbye; I forced the sadness out. I wanted my last memories of her to be happy.

The doorbell rang, and straight away, I knew that this would be the last moments I would ever have with my mother.
