You may not have been raised by your father, but you knew there were too many details for him to lie about something like this. He was telling you the truth about everything. About your mother, about their relationship, about your own grandparents.

Your mother's stories had too many unanswered questions. Everytime she told you about your father she looked guilty. She was always sad when talking about him and now you knew why.

He didn't leave you two, he was taken from you two. She missed him and hated talking bad about him, but that's what he wanted. He knew you needed better but couldn't receive it if you were stuck in the past.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?" By this time your face was wet with tears.

Your father, who only now looked like a real father to you sat there in guilt. "I didn't think you'd want to hear it. But now I think you needed to."

You didn't care if everyone in the restaurant was looking at you weird or if they were judging you behind their menus. You were crying like a baby and continued to do so. "You think I needed to?"

"For a really long time, after your mother died, I thought that if you lived better than I did you'd be happier. If you lived a life without obstacles you wouldn't have the guilt and worry I had."

He smiled again with sincerity you only ever saw in your mother. "(Y/N), every happy moment in my life was made with you and your mother."

You didn't want to hear it anymore. If you listened more you just might sob like a mad woman right there in the middle of the restaurant.

"It was because you two showed me love that I was happy in life. So..." He took a long sigh and stared at his glass. "I understand if you're making hasty decisions based on this boy."

He leans back and chuckles with dry laughter. "I've only met this boy once, but I've noticed how he gives you a lot of strength." Your father then looks away with more guilt. "At the time I was worried you were already too into boys so I couldn't help but be rude. I mean, I did promise to take care of you after all."

You almost start to laugh. "So that's why you were like that to him."

"The boy has an earring (Y/N)."

"Not to mention he's the son of Weisslogia."

"He is?!"

You nod and smile once realizing you two were holding a normal conversation for once without awkwardness bearing down on your shoulders. "Yeah, and he's best friends with Rogue, the guy you tried to set me up with."

Your father almost face palmed at the thought. "I could only imagine how that conversation went."

"Every conversation related to that engagement was awkward, not gonna lie."

He groans and rubs the back of his neck. "I'm sorry (Y/N). I was trying to do what was best for you. If anything I should've set up an engagement with you and the delinquent."

You start actually laughing out loud. "I think that ship has long sailed but thanks for the thought."

"What happened between you two?" His genuinely concerned side was coming out and you had yet to be used to it.

You shrugged. "Rumors around school I guess. He thought I cheated on him so now he's not talking to me."

"I see." You father nodded in deep thought for a bit before looking up into your eyes.

"(Y/N), no matter what people say, you can't listen to them. You know this don't you?" You shrugged. "(Y/N), people will tell you you're something you're not, but all you can do is be you and ignore them. My whole life I was a robot to people, but your mother showed me I was so much more."
