Draco's pov.

I step onto the marble staircase after saying goodbye to Blaise. Reaching the seventh floor in minutes I walk quickly down the dark corridor. It is necessary to make it back to the common room before our rounds start. I feel her anxiety and it's making me on edge. I hear a low laugh and whirl around. Nothing but shadows. I take out my wand and keep moving. Another laugh echoes through the empty hallway. I have to keep my head cool or else Hermione will feel my fear. I wait a second and then quickly run. I see a figure behind me start to run too. Then I feel a sudden pull on my ankles and I start to fall. Trip jinx.

My body hits the stone floor hard leaving bruises but I quickly jump up. There's two of them. They approach one tall the other stocky. The features come in to view, Nott and Goyle. I point my wand at them.

"What do you want?" I say suspicion clear in my tone.

"You're a traitor." Says Goyle.

"What do you mean?" I say backing up but almost instantly hitting a wall.

"You're not a death eater anymore," Nott spits at me.

"So?" I say my tone laced with frost.

"You betrayed us!" Goyle says his wand flashing. At the same time, he and Nott yell the disarming charm. I block Goyle's but Nott's hits me in the chest. My wand flys out of my hand. Now I'm scared. Goyle and Nott lung forward I'm no match for both of them. Goyle pulls back his fist and throws it at my stomach. They hit me repeatedly. I'm on the floor they back up breathing heavily.

"You're nothing Draco." Says Nott spitefully. Then I see her rush towards me.

"And here's his hero." Says Nott walking into the light.

"Fuck off Nott," I spit at him, hating him.

"Language Draco we have a lady in our presence. Goyle get over here and help me finish off the traitor." Nott spits the last word at Me. I stand up still holding my chest. Hermione summons my wand to her.

"Let's get out of here Goyle. It was hard enough disarming him once." The two of them speed off down the corridor. I sink to the floor again and Professor McGonagall exists her office clad in a bathrobe.

"Oh my goodness, what in Merlin's name happen?" She says rushing over.

"He was attached by Nott and Goyle." She waves her wand several times and my injuries fade away.

"Get him to bed, forget about the rest of your rounds tonight." She says walking away down another corridor. Hermione gets me up and into a standing position.

"I'm sorry," I say after a while.

"For what?" She asks raising her eyebrows.

"I got hurt and that means you felt pain." She rolls her eyes at me. I frown, I am being serious. Did she think I was joking?

"This time it's really not your fault." She says as we reach the portrait.

"Password." Says Sir Fredrick yawning.

"Unity," Hermione says and we enter. I walk up the stairs heavily and push open my bedroom door. I pull off my robes and walk into the bathroom holding my wand. I empty my mind and clear my thoughts. Now Hermione won't be able to sense my feelings.

I pull off my blood-stained shirt and look at myself in the mirror. My scars stare back at me. They each hold a horrible memory, some new some old. Burns and cuts cover me, marking me. I move my wand and remove the blood from me. I face away from the mirror, my back was almost worse. That's where the whip marks are. Dozens and dozens, over and over. I run my hands over my face. I try, I really try to hold in the pain, but how could I. I cry.

I eventually weep myself to sleep. Deep in the silk covers. I'm dreaming that I'm standing in the basement. I've had this nightmare a hundred times. I know what's coming. I can't move my feet or speak. Then he stands I front of me.

"Look at you, you're worthless pointless useless." He screams at me slapping me to emphasize the insult. One punch and I'm on the ground. He draws a whip, I scream with ever blow that follows. But I feel a hand on my shoulder a warm soft gentle hand. Hermione's hand.

I sit up panting. She's there in my room.

"What's wrong?" I say looking at her.

"You had a nightmare it woke me up." She says giving me a hug. I instantly feel better. I grab her around the waist and throw her on the bed beside me. She laughs. Merlin her laugh is wonderful. I grin back at her. Her soft curls framing her face and those molten chocolate eyes. I love everything about her.

"Sorry," I say my face falling. She pulls away and starts towards the door.

"Stay. Please." I say begging. She moves back to me and tucks herself in. I slide closer to Hermione and put my arms around her. I hold her close to me, needing her protection.
