Draco's pov

Hermione hugs her friends and a pain rips through me. I sigh and watch her from a shadow as she opens each of her friend's presents and smiles. I wish I had known it was her birthday I could have gotten her something. But then again I always hated birthdays. My father always acted like it was any other day and my mother would just wish me a happy birthday in the morning. They were never anything of importance or significance. I feel jealous when Hermione opens Potter's present because I could tell the present was very meaningful to her. She feels my jealousy and turns around to look at me but just as quickly faces her friends again. I walk back into my room. I'm about to flop down on my bed but find a screech owl sitting there. Its dark feathers ripple as I stroke it pulling a letter from its claws. My teeth clench as I unfold it and begin reading.

Dear Son,

I understand that your Mother has told you of your blood inheritance. I am writing to warn you that if your mate is of lower blood status I will kill her. I have a dark art that will save you from death. Then you can marry someone of my choosing. A miss Green-grass.

I will be arriving at the school the weekend after Thanksgiving to serve justice to your attack on me last summer.

Your Father.

Rage burns through me but I quickly control my anger cause I don't want to scare Hermione. I feel sick, why had I punched him? He wouldn't kill me but he has been close to it multiple times. And Hermione will feel my pain this time I hear a knock at the door then Hermione's voice.

"Listen it's fine that you didn't know it was my birthday. How could you have?" I close my eyes. I throw open the door and hug her tightly. I wasn't going to let my father lay I finger on her. I will protect her with my last breath. I walk back into my room and close the door behind me.
