"HI, I'M NINA! What's yours?" I stuck my hand out to shake the little boy's hand.
"Johnny." He hesitantly shook my hand and looked down at the ground.
"Well Johnny, wanna play with me?"
"R-really?" His big brown eyes lifted off of the pavement and looked up.
"Sure! Let's play tag. You're it!" I giggled as I ran away from him and hid behind a rock.
It didn't take him long to find me, because my poofy curly hair was sticking out everywhere. "I found you, you're it!" Johnny exclaimed.
"Aw, no fair! I wasn't ready!" I frowned, crossing my arms.
"Fine. How about we play pirates instead?" Johnny pointed to the slide. The idea was brilliant!
"Yeah, and we should pretend those rocks over there are the enemies!" I exclaimed. We were scrambling around the playground as we were pretending the enemies were trying to attack us.
This went on until the we heard faint music from the ice cream truck coming towards the packed playground. I rummaged through my pockets and found a couple of dimes.
"I'm feeling a bit peckish, let's go get some ice cream!" I suggested.
Johnny scrunched up his eyebrows. "Peckish? What's that?" He asked.
I shrugged. "It means hungry, I don't know. I found it in a book that I read about tea parties."
"Well, you go ahead, I don't have any money." He said.
"Don't worry, I have a few dimes. I can pay for you!" I offered.
"Really? Thanks, Nina!" Johnny smiled.
"You're welcome. I mean I would feel bad if you had to watch me devour over my ice cream." I giggled.
We ran over to the ice cream truck. A man's head popped out of the small window. "Hey, kids. What would you like?"
"I'll have an orange creamsicle and — Johnny, what do you want?" I asked.
"Just a vanilla ice cream cone." he replied.
"Okay, and one vanilla ice cream cone please?" I placed the money on the counter.
The man's head went back inside to get our orders. "Alright, here you go, enjoy!" The man smiled.
We happily grabbed our treats. "Thank you!" Johnny and I said in unison.
We rushed back to the playground and climbed up to the top of the jungle gym and just sat there looking up at the clouds, licking our cold treats.
"Look at that cloud, it looks like a bunny." I pointed to one cloud.
"Nah, it kinda looks more like a duck." He replied.
I looked at him while raising my eyebrow; a habit of mine whenever I'm confused. "Whatever, mustache man." I laughed.
"What's so funny?" I pointed to his mouth that was now covered with ice cream.
"Oh," he sheepishly said as he wiped it off with his sleeve. We sat there talking about whatever until my mom called me to go home.
"Nina, honey it's time to go home!" My mom walked over to us.
"Awww five more minutes please?" I begged with puppy eyes knowing she'll give in.
Surprisingly, she didn't. "No, Nina you have school tomorrow. Let's go."
I sighed and jumped off the jungle gym. "Fine. Sorry Johnny, I have to go. I'll see you later!" I waved as I took my mom's hand and walked away.
"Wait!"
Confused, I turned around and saw Johnny run towards us. "Promise me you'll play with me here again?" I smiled and my pinky hooked with his.
"I promise."
