Eggs: Chickens have been genetically modified to lay around 300 eggs a year, they used to lay 12-13 just as we do except we are mammals and don't release eggs the same way.

Imagine having your period almost everyday... probably comparable to the energy it requires a chicken to lay an egg in the first place and the pain she feels if the egg breaks in her cloaca, not to mention when a chicken lays an egg they lose calcium in order to form the egg (Some chickens do eat they eggs after laying them to try to restore the calcium.)
When chickens are born into the egg industry to try to get more female hens for egg laying. There is a 50% chance they will be male, male chicks are suffocated/ gased or ground up alive before 72hrs of life as they are no use to the egg industry, they don't lay eggs. The tip of chickens beaks are cut/ burned off.
Free range hens are no different than battery except for the fact they are not in cages. they are still all crammed together in those sheds you see from the road.

When a chickens egg laying decreases they are starved in a sick attempt to speed up their egg laying, this is called forced molting/induced molting.

You see a hen doesn't lay eggs when molting (when their body loses feathers), molting naturally happens but force molting is speading up the molting process by starving the hens, this way molting is finished quicker and eggs can be layed again. Sadly when the hens egg production actually declines (not due to molting) they are sent to slaughter because they are of no use to the egg industry anymore.
What about Backyard eggs? You are still exploiting the animal when you don't need to.

Luckily there is alternatives to eggs now adays, and you don't even need to consume vegan eggs to be healthy.
