We currently grow enough food to ensure 60 billion land animals never miss a meal, and yet we struggle to feed a mere 7 billion people (I say mere because we are feeding 10x the number of animals as we feed people).
We are feeding about 60% of the world's crops to animals raised for slaughter, and then growing more food to eat with those dead animals on our plates, we could just eat the cereal crops ourselves rather then filtering it through an animal and getting less food out of that).
The amount of feed it takes to grow 1 lbs of beef would be enough to feed to 40 people who would otherwise starve. We already have enough food (grains) on the planet to feed 10 billion more people so In other words, we're already growing enough food to feed everyone; we don't have to clear more land than we already have to feed humans.
And when you think about it, the land that we used to raise animals could then be allowed to grow back into their natural state or remediated, because we absolutely need more vegetation to combat the methane and carbon we've introduced into the atmosphere (which, animal agriculture very much contributes to). Animal waste and a high carbon atmosphere acidifies the waters and creates dead zones in the oceans; then we overfish the large predators (Tuna, swordfish, etc), overfish the smaller animals (bottom feeders and their predators), and then we have very little left to purify this system.
