burgundy seas

the water was clear and blue, and the sand was white and soft and moved ever so slightly with the gentle breeze whistling through the trees. bright skies painted the expanse of the horizon, a mellow powder blue making her eyes burn as they strained against the sun's rays.

she jumped into the water with a splash, the world fading around her as water flooded into her ears and she opened her eyes, seeing a school of colorful fish a bit away in the shallow water.

the maldives were breathtaking, and even though she came every year with her family, it never failed to leave her awestruck.

she spent hours in the sun, not bothering to put on sunscreen even though she knew she would get scolded for it later on, when her smile still reflected the sun and her eyes were filled with stars.

she reached up a pale arm to shield her eyes from the bright light, letting her body go slack as she floated on the surface of the water, her thin white shirt billowing around her like a cloud.

her background music was the water levels that rose and fell, plugging and unplugging her ears, and the birds singing softly in the distance. the rustle of the forest in the middle of the island was calming, and she vaguely thought she heard some wildlife in there.

she would go explore it later. but for now, she would lay here and feel the tension leave her body in a trickle, feel her pores open from being exposed to sun warmed water and taste the salt on her lips that left her thirsty but satisfied.

she did a lazy backstroke to the pier, pulling herself up onto the splintering wood and laid backwards, the heat making her skin burn where it made contact with the surface.

the waves crashed gently on the beach. birds sang. somewhere, on one of the huts a wind chime chimed softly.

she closed her eyes.

when she opened her eyes, it was dark out.

the air was still warm and humid, but she shivered as her still- damp hair tumbled down her back when she sat up.

it was peaceful, until she heard a splash.

her head whipped to the side and she stared as a beautiful boy swam gracefully in the pure water, his dark hair plastered to his forehead as the moonlight illuminated it. his skin was practically glowing against the dark water but she could tell there was a healthy amount of melanin in it.

she found herself getting lost in the swoop of his neck, the gentle slope of his cheek as it connected to the soft curves of his lips. his nose was something eloquent, round and a bit down turned at the tip, a tall bridge that her eyes took a dive off of, allowing her gaze to fall to his toned chest and the thin waist that disappeared into the water.

and then he went under.

she waited a few seconds. a minute passed, and bubbles floated to the surface in a disturbing myriad.

she held her breath for another thirty seconds, letting it out with a pained gasp when her lungs started to burn.

she dove in without another thought, blinking through the rush of water and ignoring the stinging in her eyes.

and there he was, body limp and very much dead looking. he was pale and as he floated down, down, down, and she pushed a little bit harder, grabbing him under the arms and using her legs to propel them both upwards with her last breaths.

when they broke the surface he gasped, blinking furiously and choking and sobbing.

and yet he still looked ethereal in this whole mess, trying to push her away weakly.

"why would you do that," he moaned and the sound was pitiful, a deep destroyed noise that tugged at her heartstrings.

she clearly didn't have an answer to his question, though, and as he stared at her half in desperation and half in despair, she realized she had a chance to change something in his sad predicament.

"you're going to be okay," she finally whispered, the words rippling around them.

he shook his head a few times too many, as if he was trying to convince himself of the same truth.

up close he was even more unearthly, with dark eyes that seemed to suck her in, letting her soul take a plunge into two deep pools. beads of water cascaded down his body and she found herself bringing him into her arms and letting his shaking body rest against hers.

his breath was unsteady, much like the waves around them, pushing them and pulling them closer to each other. his heart beat against her chest. she felt in that moment, that she was connected to him.

she inhaled. the briny smell of the sea flooded her senses, but as she pushed her nose into his hair she smelled something sweet underneath the fear and uncertainty. his smooth skin was hot against hers.

a warm wind tousled her hair. and she sank with him.
