Depressing One Shots

  She bounded up the steps again. By now, she had memorized how many strides it took. 

1, 2, 3, 4 the counting put her mind at ease. Made it easier not to think about what she was doing or where she was going. 

5, 6, 7, 8 she was hardly paying attention to her feet now. 

9, 10, 11, 12. As she continued to sprint to the top, she made it to the door and pushed it open allowing the cool breeze to blow her hair every which way. She stepped out into the cold brisk night and looked upon her surroundings. She slowly stepped the correct amount of steps till she reached the edge, 

1, 2, 3 her steps cracked the ice below her feet. 

4, 5, 6 the crackling grew louder as she moved faster. 

7, 8, 9 there was no stopping now. 

10 she stepped up to the ledge, breathing in the refreshing air. Then she looked down on the city that always towered over her. 

One more step that's all it would take. 

She had tried so many times before. But each time, the thought of her loved ones dragged her back home. Not this time though, this time she knew that they didn't care if they saw her smile again, it had been absent for awhile anyway. This time she knew that they wouldn't even bother to check the face of the teenage girl who jumped, not even after all the calls. This time she knew that this was best for her family and her friends. This way they wouldn't have to take care of her anymore, a burden would be lifted, and she knew now that it would not be replaced with another one. 

So she slipped her earbuds into her ears with her numb feeling-less fingers and pressed shuffle. Ironically the first song was Free Fallin. And as she fell that song played, and a tear slipped down her face. 

A tear of joy, for she would no longer have to suffer living her horrible life in the city of New York, New York. And all the passersby would see that the dead girl lying in the middle of the sidewalk had a smile on her face, for the first time in a long time.
