In no hurry to start off the new school year Luke made his way into the overly sophisticated kitchen to make himself breakfast.
Waffles or eggs and bacon today? He questioned himself. Learning family recipes from his mother and her parents as he grew up, he knew his way around a stove top better than most 21 year olds his age. His fellow peers knew more about what mix drinks taste good than how to make a meal without the use of their phone or a microwave.
"Luke!" His father bellowed down the stairs. "What are you still doing here? You've got your first class in half an hour and it takes 25 minutes to get there. How do you expect to take over Kane Industries if you don't show up to your classes on time? This is your last chance to get your act together, I don't need my company going in the crapper because you didn't pay attention during your courses."
Already done for the day thanks to his father, Luke muttered a "Whatever" and walked out the door, grabbing his keys and backpack on the way out.
When would his father learn? Luke had absolutely no interest in taking over the company. Ever since his mother died his father just buried himself in deals and negotiations and completely ignored his own son. If he did acknowledge him it was just to congratulate him on his good grades or to do better and stop skipping classes like the majority of his education has been. His only real act of defiance.
What point is there to take other classes when you have no idea what you want to really do in the first place. So he let his father select his course, all business of course. Got to get that leg up don't ya?
Now in a mood since he didn't get to do one of his favorite pass times, cook, thereby eating and having the same old 'get your act together' argument with his father, Luke pulls up to campus. The Southern Nevada College sign greeting him like it always has the past couple years he has been coming here. Full scholarship of course, what else can you expect when the Dean is buddies with your dad, freaking snitch. Whenever he decided to not show up for a boring lecture where the professor drones on, the Dean, who's name just so happens to be Dean Smith, would somehow find out and tell on him earning argument after argument about not living up to the Kane name.
"Woah man, what's got that scowl on your face this time?" Ace the one and only best friend of Luke Kane asks.
"What it always is." paying no mind to the snip in his tone, being used to it after their lifetime of friendship, Ace nods in understanding.
"Old man on ya about taking over again?" Already knowing the answer as it is a usual topic in the Kane household, Ace lets his friend vent knowing he is gunna need it to get through the day of professors yammering on when everyone would much rather be sleeping in on this monday morning in the great state of Nevada.
"When is he not? He'll never learn I don't want to be stuffed in a suit and crammed behind a desk the rest of my life living on as a work drone."
"Well what do you want to do? If anything that's your first step. You gotta know what you want to do with your life if you are gunna step up to him."
Sighing, knowing his best friend is right, like always, the pair walk into their shared first class of the school year and over to their friends Jack and Tim.
"I don't know Ace, but I need to find out soon. Every time I'm in one of these damn classes it's a step closer to my doom."
"Doom? Him and his dad have another argument again?" asks Jack, the always nosey blonde of the group.
"Of course they did. When does he ever get out of that?" Sasses Tim, a brunette like Ace and Luke.
"Could we not talk about my shitty personal life, I just want to sit through this lecture and get it over with." Plopping down in a desk chair next to Jack, with Ace sitting to his right after he settled his stuff.
Holding his hands up in surrender "Hey man, no harm. I would kill to have something as great as Kane Industries dropped into my lap when I finish my stint here, hell we all would. But it's your surname and your father. You got a better chance of making big bucks when we graduate than 90 percent of the people here." states Jack.
"Yah well you guys can have it, that company is just not me. Besides I have enough of my own money to last me a lifetime. Plus what I'll get from my moms will on my 22nd birthday. I don't need anymore damn money." Knowing it's a lost cause to get Luke to realise how good he has it to not only have a job lined up, but to be the boss too, Jack and the others keep their mouth shut and pay attention to the professor starting their 2-3 hour speech.
