" The Hall of Sorrow? So... there are different halls here? Which hall are we in?" I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.
A smile again. Duh!
"The hall of Peace darling! The hall of Peace," she drew in a deep breath, "Everything is so sweet here! This hall is meant for accidental deaths or murders. Those who didn't mean to die, but were killed. The greatest thing they need is peace within them!"
On seeing my confused face, she explained further,"You see, people who come here are confused, scared. They don't know what's going on around them. Some even don't know that they passed away. Usually accidental deaths or murders occur instantly causing confusion, so this happy place lightens the spirits up, enabling them to take in the news easily."
"What about the Hall of Sorrow then?"
"Oh! That's for suiciders or people who not only know that they have died, but also wished to die when they were alive. No matter what peace, happiness or joy is provided to them, they decide to be glum and sad. Initially, we did try sorting them into this hall, hoping that peace would cure them, but the results were...not...so pleasant. The Hall of Sorrow reflects their pains and makes them happy wallowing in their griefs-or...whatever!" she made a face.
God! Even that had a hint of a smile hidden in it. I guess that's the way her face was or whatever!
"How many halls are there in all?" I titled my head, absorbing the new information.
"Oh! Three major ones- The Hall of Sorrow, The Hall of Peace and the Hall of Fame. The fame Hall's for those who gave up their lives for some worthy cause demanding respect." she perked her shoulders up, as if she herself had died for some great cause (probably while trying to save her lip glosses from falling off her balcony)
"Besides, there are other important but minor Halls, such as, the hall of Doom, the hall of Punishment, the hall of Order and the hall of Torture. They can be very dangerous, you know!"
I nodded grimly. This wasn't seeming too appeasing.
"Any more queries? We're getting late." She grinned, showing a set of perfect pearly white teeth. I wondered if they had some hall of Beauty somewhere around.
"Uhh...no... Thank you." I tried smiling back but it didn't come out that well. After all, who could smile happily after hearing about dangerous halls of Dooms and Tortures? (Except the weird lady in front of me, of course.)
"Oh! By the way, I'm miss Tiara. Now, come on, we'll see your next destination."
Tiara? What kind of a name was that?
"Destination?" Something told me that it wouldn't be good. A dread washed over me which I hadn't been feeling all this while.
"Oooh sweetie!" she cooed, "We all have to move on in this cycle of life, one way or another. Now, c'mon!"
Before I could say anything else, she pulled me and started walking swiftly towards the door, her heels click-clacking on the marbled floor.
We walked, no wait, ran would be a better word, straight out into a long corridor and inside a different room with an old man seated in the centre with a huge screen behind him.
He was wearing a black cloak with white gloves and boots and his face was painted half black, half white. He too had a clipboard in his hand and was looking keenly into it.
"Mr Infinite, what is the next destination for Miss Casey-Walkins-16 years-old?" Miss Tiara chirped.
So this was the famed Mr. Infinite!
Mr. Infinite smirked and looked up. His eyes were startingly black. Just like the infinite black space that I had been pulled into after my death. When he spoke, I noticed that his teeth were perfectly white.
Must be a speciality of all the heads around here.
"Hmm... Casey Walkins... she is 1105 on the waiting list. Has to go back to her house for now."
Miss Tiara, with a quick nod pulled me towards the screen.
"The list keeps increasing. Seems like we're having a major problem. Listen sweety, go back to your house and stay there as a ghost for now. Once we clear enough spaces for a new life, we'll call you and send you there. You see, the number of people dying nowadays is abnormally increasing by leaps and bounds...they're crossing the rate of people being born."
"What about Moksha? Its supposed to set you free into the Universe so that you never return, right?"
I think I said something wrong.
Miss Tiara had made a face. A face, which, for once didn't have any smile.
"Moksha? You call the evil work of the hunters as Moksha? Moksha is good but what they-"Mr. Infinite gave a loud cough. They were trying to hide something.
Miss Tiara quickly made it up and laughed hesitantly," Yes...yes... sweetie... we don't have much time, we'll talk about it later someday..."
Something was definitely wrong.
Saying so, she quickly typed something on her board and the screen in front of me erupted into a purplish flame.
"Whoa!"
I stared at it, as the flame swirled and flickered, ready to engulf me.
Well...at least my parents will be there...Will they be able to see me?" I asked, beginning to panic for the first time.
Miss Tiara looked away, a hint of guilt flashing in her eyes.
"Tiara! How could you forget to tell her about it?" Mr. Infinite's voice boomed in the room.
Miss Tiara turned a deep red as she muttered a sorry and then, turning towards me, explained, "1105, long way down, can take ages! No cutey pie, they wont be able to see you...I'm so sorry that I forgot to tell you...the time you spend here is not the same as that on Earth--"
"What do you mean, Miss Tiara?"
"Your funeral is over and your parents were so shocked by your death that they decided to shift over to Alice Springs in Australia--"
My mouth opened like a gaping fish.
"Australia?"
She nodded softly, saying, "Yes. Australia...and before you ask me whether you can shift there with them or not," she spoke, as if reading my mind,"The blunt answer is no. That's because you were born and brought up here, and you died in Canada as well. Hence, till you are assigned a new life, part of your inner aura is stuck to this place which you cannot leave. Okay? Now, bye Poochiekins!"
(Did she really call me poochiekins?)
"B..but --- HEY!"
I screamed as she pushed me into the flame, the portal engulfing me, coiling around me, pulling me in. I fell down, yelling as the flame darted through me, piercing me, grabbing me. Tears welled up as I screamed and shut my eyes.
It felt like ages when finally, I landed with a soft thud on something hard
(one perk, being light-weight.)I groaned and opened my eyes slowly, the pain of the flame still tickling me. As my eyes adjusted to the sunlight pouring in through an open window, I looked around and gasped.
