Midnight sparks

Have you ever experienced true shock?

Like the moment when you feel that you are being thrown into this massive bottomless pit from where there is no way out? Or maybe when you feel as if you are about to drown...as if all the air is expelled from your lungs and something is choking you? Again it may vary for different individuals.

For me, in plain terms, it is like a stop watch. When I hear something shocking, something equivalent to lightning (though I've never been struck by one) runs down my back and everything stops around me. The fire stops crackling, the leaves hang in mid air, the waters forget to spit in the face of heaven and the land beneath me...well...that's still as always.

Yeah...that's pretty much how I get shocked...and it's pretty much inexplicable.

"...Especially with that pendant of yours"... this last bit kind of kept on reverberating in my ears until it became a blur of meaningless words.

"HELLO! YOU STILL HERE?" Zack yelled to shake me back from this shock.

I fidgeted in my place and bit my lips. Curling one toe over another and reaching out to my pendant instinctively, I asked," What do you mean by saying that my pendant has a special connection to my death?"

He smirked," Tell me honestly, didn't you ever have any...umm...magical experience with this pendant?"

I rubbed the red glistening stone and nodded. Warmth swept over me as the ruby began glistening brighter.  A new surge of power welled up in me when I pressed my fingers to the pendant. It gave me power.
It gave me something more.
Something supernatural.
    Something  magical.

I closed my eyes as the view of tombstones came into play. A sparkling, moon lit night.

Dry leaves scrunched under my feet as I walked slowly through the maze of graves and went near the small cathedral at the end of our town's graveyard. I checked my watch.

Midnight.

Sneaking out of my house wasn't easy and initially I had refused Chris for this proposal but...he convinced me to do it. He convinced me to break my parents' rule, cheat them and come here at midnight for something special.

      Talk about being bad.
Part of me wanted to scream...refuse...be firm...

The other part which was overpowering? It wanted to obey Chris. Be his cute, lovely girl. Make him happy.

How could I be so immature?

The wind was still that night. I tucked my hair behind my ears and waited for him to show up.  My pendant, which I had acquired a few days ago while cleaning the attic, provided me with some warmth. This pendant was miraculous. It fit around my neck so easily and beautifully that it seemed as if it had been made exclusively for me. Even better, apparently, it had some enchanting powers.

Right from my childhood, I used to feel as if I was connected with the wind...as if...it was a part of me....my soul. The fragrant, easy going air always used to envelope me in its comfort.
This neck piece only strengthened it.
Now, I could trace even the slightest disturbances in the air...evoke any  persistent fragrance to lead me to it's main, starting point. Recognise every tint of the sky...every cloud, every colour.  Twirl the wind and mould it according to my wish. I could play with it.

He did turn up, a bit late though. He had smelled of perfume. Strong, ladies perfume. Of course, he had the excuse ready...that he had accidentally put his sister's perfume. Who cares, right?

He pushed aside the rusted door of the cathedral and we  quietly crept in. Walking through a flight of winding stairs, we  reached the top most part of the tower, where the bell was placed. The view was simply beautiful. All the white stones shining in the moonlight, the trees glowing in the dark, the sky bright and white and the night deadly silent, only broken by the occasional hooting of an owl.

That's when my pendant had begun growing unusually bright and warm. Needless to say, I didn't bother about it. We talked, laughed and kissed. Maybe it was a night of fleeting passions...

The kiss had grown a bit too harsh and before I could stop it, I had found  myself being pushed against the wall, my arms pinned over my head and his hands trailing gently across my hips. His eyes had twinkled  with love.

No wait...

His eyes had twinkled with...lust.

Trailing soft, fluttering kisses down my neck, he had forced moans of agonising pleasure out of me. He had expertly teased my skin with his tantalising lips...every bite, every kiss, every touch...

Don't worry. I didn't go too far. Something made me stop.

My pendant.

It had grown too hot...too warm...too bright. Just like as if it was on fire.  Even Chris had stopped kissing me, noticing it. I had tried rubbing it, which only resulted in sending my fingers haywire with current. Yes, not warmth but sparks. Current.

The wind had been dead all this while, but now,  I could feel it swirling around me. Very soon, it turned into a violent vortex, howling and trapping me in it. Chris had backed of, aghast.  I was too scared to even scream at that moment. My hair was in a swirling mess, my dress kept on fluttering and sparks began shooting off my fingers menacingly.

" Stop it, Casey!" He had shrieked in fright.

       "I--I can't!  Chris... help me!"

Somehow, the moon had managed to hide behind dark clouds and as we looked up, I noticed strange, yet similar blue sparks flickering across the clouds. Thunder.

I had slumped down screaming. Shouting. Yelling.
Asking for help.
He was a coward. He assured me that he would get help and ran away. He never returned with help.

This madness had continued for sometime and then, everything had receded. Slowly.
Everything had become normal again, as if nothing had happened at all.  I had walked back in the dark, shivering in the cold and sneaked back to my room  as quietly as ever.

Chris and I hadn't talked for the next week.
