I could tell they were all excited, and hell I would’ve been if it wasn’t for certain circumstances. But that was a story for another time. I slung my bag over my shoulder and adjusted the straps. My bow and arrow hung loosely at my side, close enough to reach if needed. I nodded at everyone and stepped through the doorway. I quietly raced down the steps, the other four silently followed. I stopped abruptly when we reached the wood covered window that the walker had gotten through last night and I shook my head. I nodded my head in the direction of the door that was dead-bolted shut with several planks of wood keeping it in place. Liam caught on and quickly led the other four to the door.
“I’m going to go out and scout, you four take off the wood and wait for me to knock. If there are walkers out there ill lead them away first or kill them.” I explained before slipping through a small gap between the wood and the window frame without waiting for them to answer. The wood was easy to get off, considering it was a pull door, so all it really had to do was make sure it didn’t get pulled open. The wood was nailed to the door for the most part, and hit the frames to make sure it didn’t open. They just had a couple nails to rip out, that or just break the wood. I scanned my surroundings and made sure nothing was outside, whether it was a walker or something else. I had sworn to myself I would protect them and get them to the safe zone, and that was exactly what I was doing. I don’t break promises. When I was sure it was safe I walked over to the side door and knocked twice on it.
“Password?” Someone called through and I shook my head.
“I’m leaving without you.” I called back, turning on my heel.
“Okay okay, wait. We’re coming” he called out, and I turned to see it was Louis talking. I laughed.
“Too much information, jeez keep it in your pants alright?” I got out between chuckles. Louis’ face turned bright red and he laughed a fake laugh, shooting me a pointed look showing he wasn’t amused. But the other three were in stitches, though it wasn’t that funny. It could be that his reaction was funnier than the actual joke. I smiled widely then turned around, walking forward with my senses heightened. I pulled out my map and sighed, without a car this journey could easily take two weeks (A/N walking would actually only take 2 days but for story purposes) and with good reason too. I have been moving around and getting farther away from that horrid place and now I’m going back. Or at least close enough that I could be taken again, and I wasn’t going to let that happen. I gazed at all the stars and circles on my map. I had been around, I knew where to go and where not to. Right now, we were walking out of the city, closer to London. But first we had to get through the rest of the city and the suburbs then the forest. (A/N they are in Leeds at the moment) I examined the map and decided we would have to stop in Birmingham, which was dangerous but, we needed to replenish our stock if we were walking all the way to London. It’s close to 118 miles (117.8 mi) so we would need all the resources we could get, and we will stop at some places for a couple days or so if needed. So overall it might take three weeks to a month. Which was okay with me, I would get to spend some more time with the lads. I stopped walking and put the map in my pocket again. The boys had stopped chatting and were now watching me intently, while I listened. It was extremely quiet, too quiet- no matter how cliché that actually sounded- there was something seriously wrong. I listened intently and faintly picked up on a slight groaning. I unfroze and grabbed Harry- who was next to me- who in turn grabbed Liam, then Zayn and Louis and we sprinted toward a close building that would provide enough protection for us. We ran into an abandoned ASDA and quickly I grabbed a shelf and pushed it in front of the door with the boys’ help. I quickly ran to the back and up the ladder leading to the second floor, (A/N I’m American so if I get any of this wrong then I’m sorry. Let me know of the mistake and ill fix it), and quickly climbed up it. I ran back to the front and gazed out of the filthy windows checking that what I heard was correct. I saw Liam about to ask a question and I shook my head no and put my pointer finger to my lips as a sign to be quiet. He made a confused face but nodded anyways, not making a sound. I turned back to the window and I could see the others doing the same through my peripherals. I shook my head and gazed intently outside, scanning buildings, streets, alleyways, and anything else I could see just to confirm my suspicions. Suddenly a horse raced from an alley, neighing loudly, and then a large pack of walkers followed intently behind. The horse was hurt, and nothing could save it now. Not with the walkers locked on its scent. It galloped as fast as its injured leg would allow, but it wasn’t fast enough as a walker launched itself at the horse, causing it to collapse and cry out. I took out my bow and arrow, trying to drown out the horse’s cries and slipped out of the window. I loaded my bow and arrow and shot the horse, right in the heart, killing it immediately and making sure that it didn’t have to die such a horrid death. I shot another arrow through its head, making sure that it wouldn’t come back as a walker horse. It has happened before, when a walker catches an animal. But once it’s killed it dies, and doesn’t turn. As long as it wasn’t the virus that killed it, it would stay dead. But I had to make sure; if that horse turns we’ll be screwed. It wasn’t very often that you see an animal walker, but it has happened. I quietly slipped back in the window and sat down, back against the glass. I see all the boys giving me sympathetic glances but I just shrug. It wasn’t a big deal; I’ve killed much worse than a horse. I’ve had to kill my best friend, that I may never get over but it had to happen. He would have killed me, and I know he would hate if I let him continue ‘living’ as a walker, and I use the term living lightly. We talked about it, if either of us turned then we would kill whoever it was. No matter what but sometimes I wish it was Greg that killed him, I would have been much happier. I shook out of my thoughts and peaked outside again, walkers were crowding the horse, devouring it. It was still warm, so they would continue to eat from it because they looked starving. Usually once the heart stopped they would stop eating, but it looks like not a lot of people are left to eat anymore. I glanced around the room we were in and spotted a second ladder leading to the roof. I glanced out the window again and saw a chain of stores right next to this one, and saw the wind wasn’t blowing. Perfect. I jumped up, and began speed walking to it. I hurriedly climbed up and started opening the hatch when it let out a loud squeal. I froze and looked down to Zayn who then ran to the window to see what the walkers were doing. He came back and shook his head; they were probably too distracted with the food. I threw it open, like ripping off a band-aid, and it squealed before slamming loudly to the gravel rooftop. I flinched at the noise and jumped up to the roof. The gravel crunched under my shoes and I flinched slightly with every step. I quickly reached the edge and looked down only to see that all of the walkers had frozen and started listening. I heard a crunch behind me and all of their heads simultaneously turned toward where we were. I quickly turned and gestured for them to freeze. My heart was beating a hundred miles a minute and I my eyes were certainly blown wide. I glanced back and saw that the walkers were shuffling towards the entrance of the ASDA and I cursed. I gestured for them to hurry as I heard the crash of the shelf two floors down. The walkers were groaning and throwing their weight at the barrier, trying to get in as quickly as possible. The wind picked up for a brief second and I almost gagged at the overwhelming stench of rotting corpses and blood. When everyone was on the roof I ran to the hatch and slammed it shut, sticking a metal rod in between the two handles. I glanced around and spotted a large rock on the far end of the roof. I booked it to the rock as I heard the glass door break and the metal shelf crash to the ground. Zayn and Harry helped lift the rock and we dragged it to the latch, effectively making sure nothing could get through. We heard a scream and we all jumped out of our skins. Guess there was someone else in their too. I flinched and ran to the edge and threw my bag to the roof of the other building. All the others did the same with theirs. Liam jumped first, as I kept guard with my weapon. Zayn followed, then Louis, then Harry. I threw my bow and arrows at them, and Liam effectively caught it. There was a crash, then banging. Suddenly the hatch was flown open and I gazed at it wide eyed. How the hell? A large burly man climbed up, his flesh torn. He must’ve been the one that had just been attacked, and he clearly was not a walker. I flinched as his gaze met mine, but stepped back as soon as he started racing forward towards me. I turned and ran the short distance to the edge and jumped. The man hit my foot, making me imbalanced and I fell. I hit the edge, hard, knocking all the wind out of me. I clawed at the rooftop as I slipped lower. I was now hanging on the edge by my fingers. I glanced down to see a couple of walkers aimlessly strolling in the alley. The man jumped but didn’t make it to the edge, and plummeted down to the ground. There was a thump and a couple of sickening crunches as he hit the ground. And then moans of the walkers. My fingers began to slip. And then I lost my grip.
