Running outside into a horde of zombies, is not like running into a crowd of armed soldiers, it’s worse in many ways. Living humans do somewhat value their own lives, whereas walkers they just value food. They don’t care if their killed, and the other walkers are unfazed by a fallen comrade. You also need to be as quiet as possible, and running into a group of soldiers you usually have some sort of distorted battle cry that you’re screaming at the top of your lungs. Attacking walkers, well the only sounds you hear is the loud moans the walkers make and the sickening suction like sounds of your blade sinking into a skull or the thump of a head or lifeless body falling to the ground. It was almost like your head was under water, and every sound is muffled and distorted.
Another thing different about battling walkers and humans are the persistency. Walkers are persistent, and stupid but also incredibly crafty. Even with the odds completely against them, they continue to move forward and try to get a bite to eat, but at the same time they travel in packs. It’s not very common any more to see a walker without a pack, and if you do; you’re either very lucky or very screwed. Humans, well they quit when they know they’re going to lose, they are cowardly when it comes down to it. Although, sometimes cowardice can save your life.
Maybe if we had more cowards the world wouldn’t have ended. People would hide from the disease rather than try and cure it and end up just like the ones spreading it: dead. Dead to all the morals they had, the values they held, the thoughts that lived in their minds. Dead to everything and anything that could save them. The only thoughts running through their minds being food, kill, food. Not that they actually realized that they were killing people.
They had become monsters, things that not even the still living people could recognize. They had lost their humanity quickly, and slowly continued to take ours. Every time we killed one, it became easier, like clockwork, and eventually it doesn’t affect us at all. All the guilt and sympathy we once had was gone. We were slowly becoming them: killing for survival without a second thought.
I hated it.
The ‘battle’ was fast, quiet and fast, and it almost was better that way. If walkers felt pain, they wouldn’t have felt it this time around. I ended up taking down two walkers, the others taking down one each. The only sounds that were heard during the whole thing was the squelching of their brains being stabbed, the thumps of their dead bodies falling limply to the ground, and the moans of the walkers slowly dying down as each one fell down.
It was quiet disgusting to be honest. It sounded like walking with wet sneakers on a tiled floor.
Afterwards, we made a trek to the outside ‘gates’ so we could leave. It was beginning to get too dangerous staying here.
It took only a few minutes, the gates weren’t too far from where we were staying. Once again, I had them stand a little ways behind me as I put my hand up to the death flower. It took a few seconds before the vines began to move again. The archway opened, the vines twisting intricately into a beautiful design.
