~Niall~ (@ beginning of the last chapter)
I stumbled forward slightly, my head spinning and stomach lurching. My body burned, like a fire was raging inside my body, tearing me apart from the inside out. The heat licking at my muscles, and the underside of my skin. Liquid fire ran through my veins, and I could feel the war going on inside of me. As a kid, I wasn’t particularly interested in science, nor was I amazing at it. But, it always intrigued me when we came to the immune system unit and how our body fights off anything that it doesn’t want in our system. Before the virus, I always thought that the coolest part about humans was the immune system, how it could make us indestructible- like a superhero. But once the virus hit, and people began dropping like flies and coming back as monsters- all praise I once had for the immune system disappeared. I saw it as something like a bully. It only attacked everything weaker than it, small amounts of an illness injected into your blood stream to help the immune system out. And then I was bitten, and I praised my immune system again. It was heroic, because even though everyone else’s immune system had lost the battle- mine had continued to fight, and mine had won. And not just once, but it seemed like it would a second time as well.
I tripped, falling to the ground. My vision was blurred, and I couldn’t make out just how far I was from the door. My stomach lurched again, horrible gagging sounds escaped from the back of my throat- but luckily that was all that came from my mouth. I crawled, my vision now almost completely black. This was the worst part of the virus in my opinion, the worst part in surviving it anyways- when it tried to leave your system, and your body just kind of shuts down. Usually, most people never have to experience this and Louis didn’t have to because I had already rid his body of the virus. The virus was trying to leave my body, while my body was trying to keep it in and destroy it. I felt a hand on my shoulder, and then one under my arm. My body was being lifted, and soon I was on my feet. My legs wobbled from beneath me, not yet used to the weight putting on them just yet. The hand that had been on my shoulder was now on my hip, an arm around my waist to steady me. A second hand was reassuringly rubbing circles into my back. I relaxed my slightly tensed form, allowing whoever was helping me to do just that- help me. I had never liked the idea of asking for help, of depending on someone else. Even now, I enjoyed being independent, and self-reliant but now I needed the help and I wouldn’t be refusing it. Ever since these four stormed into my life, guns out- literally- my life has been almost completely flipped around. At the moment, I’m not complaining, but I know that once I become too dependent on them and too attached it’ll be hell to go back to my normal life. I almost wish that they didn’t want to go to the safe zone anymore, and I am so selfishly hoping that they would rather stay with me. But I knew they were safer in there, safe from muggers, walkers, starvation. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to give them what they needed, but I so desperately wished that I could.
My stomach lurched again, this time causing me to fall to my hands and knees. Bile rose up my throat, and I really hope I at least made it outside. I felt hands rubbing soothing circles into my back but I pushed both bodies away. I could sense the confusion, but had no opportunity to act because then I was throwing up violently. My body wracked with shudders, like a leaf in a very powerful tornado. It took a couple minutes, but by the time the first round was finished, my vision had cleared immensely and I could see that we did in fact make it outside. I could also see Zayn and Liam, each standing an arm length away from me on either side of me. I frowned slightly.
“Y-you hav-ve to-o b-back up or cover your-r mouths-s.” I stuttered out, voice hoarse. I gestured to the pile of black goo lying hazardously on the ground in front of me, the incline that we were on causing it to run down away from me. The two nodded, understanding taking over their features. They each reached into their back pockets, pulling out the torn fabric I had given them when Louis was first bitten. I chuckled lightly, but soon erupted into a fit of coughs- that in the end, ended up with me hunched over and puking the last contents of my stomach and some vile black goo, up. This time, when two hands begun rubbing circles into my back I didn’t push them away, I embraced it and allowed their touches to soothe me. The second round soon died down and I felt weak. I didn’t have much in my stomach to start with but now I had close to nothing- if not nothing. A loud sob came from inside, and I shot up knowing that it was Harry. My head began to spin, and I collapsed to the ground once again with dark spots dotting my vision. Liam rubbed my back again, his other hand snaking into my hair and soothingly massaging my head. I took deep breaths, trying to slow my erratic heart before it caused me to throw up yet again. My skin burned, like it was being stretched but I couldn’t help but feel relieved that the hallucinations were over.
“Do you want me to bring him out here Niall?” Zayn questioned quietly, and I shook my head ‘no’ in response. I didn’t want him to see me like this, nor did I want to risk him getting sick. I saw Zayn nod silently before stalking over to the building and slinking inside. The sobs seemed to stop for a brief moment, before picking up again but much quieter this time- most likely muffled by Zayn’s shirt.
I slowly stood up, allowing myself to not get dizzy again, and reached a hand out for Liam when I felt stable. He grabbed my hand, allowing me to help him up but only slightly. I rolled my eyes at him but shot him a small smile in return. He smiled widely at me, and I grinned wider. I went over to where I had previously been spilling my guts and kicked dirt over the pile. I stomped down; making sure that the substance was for sure completely covered. I smiled, coughing lightly afterwards. Liam patted my back before steering me towards the building.
“We need to change Louis’ wrap.” He explained. I nodded.
“I’ll do it, you rest.” I stated firmly, my voice still hoarse causing me to cringe. He laughed, but accepted the offer nonetheless- not that I thought he would decline with the bags he has under his eyes. We both stepped inside and saw Zayn with his arms wrapped securely around Harry’s waist. “Now, I’m going to let you go Haz. I need to check on Lou, last night hurt his leg.” He muttered coughing at the end and I snickered slightly because of course it hurt his leg. I told them no strenuous activity. “But, you can’t go outside. Not yet anyways. And besides you need to get some more sleep, I think Niall wants to get going later today and you’ve exhausted yourself. So go sleep, I’m sure he’ll be there with you when you wake up okay.” He spoke gently, soothingly and kissed Harry’s forehead. I smiled slightly at the pair, jealousy poking at my brain. I shook it off, ignoring it. Zayn had Louis, and Harry had me. I watched as Harry made his way to the corner, curling up in my jumper and falling asleep not even minutes later. The boy was adorable to say the least. I stood watching him for several minutes before my gaze wandered, and I watched as Zayn stared down lovingly at Louis, hands running through his dirty hair. I watched as he slowly unwrapped the bandage, slowly as if not to hurt the boy, and cringed at the sight. Even I had to admit it was quite a gruesome sight.
“You shouldn’t have unwrapped it yet.” I muttered hoarsely. His head shot up in my direction and he shook his head. “Shouldn’t have done what you did last night either” I snickered.
~Liam~
I was grateful, to say the least. My best mate is okay, and in no other circumstances would that have happened. My other best mate has found a lad, a great guy that wants to take care of him and we are finally going to get to the safe zone. We will finally be safe. But I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen with Niall. Will they allow him in? What would they do to him if they did? I decided to let my brain rest, effectively shutting it up and falling into a light slumber.
