I could feel Harry's erratic heartbeat against my back, his breathing coming out labored and in short puffs. His hands fisted the back of my t-shirt as the walker neared us, its groans getting louder. From where we stood I could see the freezer door and through the little window in the center of the door, but they couldn't see us. I watched as Liam peeked out of the window, his eyes widening when he saw the walkers aimlessly strolling around. I could see the terror and worry in his eyes, before he disappeared from the small window. I nodded slightly to myself; the boy was smart, that was for sure. The walker was now right in front of us. The clouded over, yellowing eyes were gazing at my face. Its eyes terrified me, they were clouded over, yellowing, and the irises had lost all their color- now they were just black pools filled with hunger. Its face was set in a permanent scowl, allowing its black, rotting teeth to be on full display. I had to make a serious effort to stop myself from gagging as its putrid breath smacked me in the face. Its eyes were droopy, the skin under them was sagging off the bone, and maggots crawled around in the rolls of skin. Its hair was gray and missing in clumps, like someone tried waxing its head but forgot a few places. The skin around its mouth was rooting; black, green and peeling. Its dead eyes gazed over my features, seeing but not seeing. It sniffed me, its mouth in turn opening more and the skin rose revealing red and black swollen gums. I held my breath, my hand moving to grip Harry's waist pushing him farther into both me and the wall. I noticed walkers can't see clearly. It seems they see in colors, and everything is just a blob. They depend on smell and hearing, but sometimes touch too. Their eyes rarely worked better then someone with mild cataracts, and more times than not they actually see worse. It lifted its long, boney fingers up and rested them on my shoulder. My eyes followed the hand, without moving my head, and stared at it as it landed on my shoulder. The skin was all but there, revealing most of its hand bones. Some skin was stuck on the bones still, like they were glued there. And only a few patches remained. Small black ligaments and veins hung from its hand, landing on my shirt and staining it with the black blood that flows through the veins and body of the beast. I gazed straight ahead, my jaw stiff and gazed over the walker's features. Its chest was wide open, the skin completely cleaned off the ribs. Half- if not more- of its intestines were missing. It only had one lung, and I watched as it inflated and deflated like a balloon as it breathed. I shuttered, a disgusted groan escaping my lips. The walker froze, smelling me again, before it dropped its hand and turned away. It continued to wander away towards the 'dining area' to meet with the others. I sighed in relief and turned around to face Harry, still blocking his body from everything. He looked like he was constipated or was going to be sick from fear, but it was most likely the latter. I smiled reassuringly at him, but to no avail. He just continued to stare with wide eyes and mouth agape.
"Right." I muttered under my breath. I wrapped myself around his tall, lanky figure and took a deep breath before stepping backwards. I froze, different scenarios running through my head and none of them ending too well. I glanced around; making sure none of the attention was on us. It wasn't too hard actually, they were all mindless anyways. I released a breath I didn't realize I was holding and began to slowly and stealthily move us towards the freezer. I focused on not making any sudden movements or sounds. I haven't cared about anyone in this new world since Greg, almost 7 months ago now, and it was scary. He could completely and utterly destroy me if he were to me. And I knew, he would but at least he would be safe there but I would not. I couldn't stay there, not even for Harry... though I wish I could. But I would be crushed if he died, and that is something I will not let happen. It terrified me, caring for him- and for the other 3 as well. I shouldn't even grow so attached, they were going to leave- hell, I was the one taking them away from myself. I knew I couldn't go, they didn't yet. I was risking everything taking them there, but to me it was worth it. And that was the thought that scared me shitless. He was going to a place I wasn't willing to stay at, maybe I would end up staying though- for him, for them. If they asked or if they begged then maybe, maybe I would stay. We had almost reached the door of the freezer, when I made a vital mistake. I was so caught up in my thoughts that I wasn't careful enough. At the same time that I knocked down a small plate, Harry got cut by a small rusted nail sticking out of the wall. The shattering echoed through the small place and everyone froze. I winced at the sound, then saw the small wound on his arm bleeding and cursed in my head. I glanced behind us to see the walkers quickly shuffling their way towards us. I snapped out of my short reverie and began to practically drag Harry along as quickly as I could. In one swift motion I threw open the door, shoved Harry inside and slammed the door shut as soon as the first walker was within reaching distance of me. I pressed myself against the door, trying to protect the lads inside. I kept all my weight against the door, because it opened outwards, and I couldn't have them doing something stupid to 'save me'. I could hear them pounding on the door, screaming for me to move- to run- to hide. They screamed at me to come inside and to stop being stupid. They would risk a walker coming into the freezer, just for me and that made my heart swell. The walkers were now all around me in a giant horde, groaning and shoving and trying to get to the door; trying to get to them. I turned around quickly, not taking my weight from the door, and shot them all a look. They all stopped yelling, though their eyes shone with worry- even Harry who seemed to have snapped out of his shocked trance. I smiled a small, reassuring smile at them turning around again to face the walkers. I glanced around, my eyes stopping on a discarded chair about a foot or so away. The walkers had lost interest a couple minutes after they had stopped making noise, but they still aimlessly- and almost curiously- wandered around the small hall space that led up to the freezer door. I smoothly and quickly lunged towards the chair, swiftly picking it up and wedging it between the floor and the handle of the freezer - effectively keeping the door sealed. I smiled to myself about my handy work, then turned on my heel and slowly shuffled between the corpses. When I reached the doorway I sprinted outside, running to the middle of the square. I knew I was drawing attention as I ran, but that thought was pushed to the back of my mind as I ran faster and faster. The more attention I can draw, the better. I stopped when I reached the far end of the square, standing directly in the middle of the sidewalk. I pulled out the gun that I had stealthily nabbed from Nick and raised it toward the sky. I took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. The shot rang out, echoing off the walls of the buildings and around the square. Groans emanated from every direction, growing louder and louder as the seconds ticked by. I shot the gun once more, before running to a close alleyway and diving into the dumpster. I visibly cringed as the water sloshed around my calves, the smell hit my nose and I had to literally hold a hand over my mouth to keep from throwing up. Trash and debris floated around the brown, murky water and flies buzzed around inside the dumpster. There was movement in the water, like a mutant fish was swimming in it. I sloshed through the water as quietly as I could, grimacing every time the water splashed me in the face or when I would step on something only to have it collapse under my foot. I reached the edge relatively quickly and gazed over the rim to see walkers now aimlessly strolling around everywhere. I smiled to myself, happy that my plan worked before jumping out of the dumpster. My shoes squelched every time I stepped, causing me to wince every step. I slowed down to walker speed, groaning occasionally, causing the walkers to ignore my presence. I continued to play 'walker' until I reached the edge of where they all congregated. As soon as I was out of sight I sprinted to the little run down Chinese food place where I had left the boys. It took me two minutes tops before I reached the broken down door. I stepped over it, not caring about making a sound and gingerly walked down the hall. I took away the chair, taking one last deep breath before I opened the door.
