“It's early,” I yawned, leaning back in my chair.“It's nine in the morning,” Matt said from the kitchen.
I glanced over, running a hand through my hair. “Doesn't mean it's not early. I'm not a morning person if you can't tell.”
He chuckled lightly.
He was currently making pancakes for breakfast. Usually he only made them for himself, but Allen had been bragging about how good his pancakes were the other day, so I had asked if he would make me some.
It had been almost a week since I had been released from the hospital. I had been feeling better for the past few days, so I had told Flavio that I would be good to go shopping whenever he wanted to. He wanted to go in an hour, so I had gotten up early to get ready and eat before we left. Flavio was currently still up in his room primping.
I got up from the table, going over into the kitchen. “Need any help?”
“No, I've got it,” he replied.
I leaned against the counter, watching him as he cooked. “It smells amazing. I'm happy I'm being graced with your cooking.”
He rolled his eyes at me. “When are we going to be graced with yours? Or do you suck in the kitchen like Francois?”
“I'm a work in progress,” I laughed lightly. “My mom is an amazing cook. She taught me and Haydn, although I will admit we aren't on her level yet.”
He was quiet for a minute before speaking in a soft tone. “Do you miss her?”
“Of course I do,” I watched the batter on the griddle bubble. “But I'm probably more adjusted than my sister...I was in college living in the dorms, so I've been away already. I'm more used to separation from them than she would be. She seems to be adjusting well, but I can still tell that she's hiding a lot of the pain she feels right now…”
“I know how you're feeling,” he said after a moment. “All of us here, we met in an orphanage. My father was a deadbeat. He hated me and Allen, wanted to get rid of us ever since we were born. He said kids ruined the lifestyle he'd had with our mother. She loved us, though. She shielded us from him for years, until she got pregnant again. She got sick during the pregnancy and had a miscarriage, had to be in the hospital for a while. The day she was supposed to be released, we were at home waiting for her. But she never came home. We still don't know what happened to her. When the police found us, they tried to track her and my father down, but they were never able to. All of us know how it feels to lose a loved one, even if they won't talk about it.”
I stared in shock. I hadn't been ready for a story like that…A whirlpool of emotions hit me all at once.
“I'm so sorry…” I muttered. “That's awful….I couldn't even imagine….God, I don't even know what to say…”
My hand shot up to my eyes at the feeling of a tear quickly slipping down my cheek.
He placed a hand on my head, glancing away with a flustered look on his face. “Don't cry…”
“Sorry,” I forced a chuckle, wiping at my eyes. “I'm okay, I won't.”
“I didn't tell you to make you cry…” he sighed, the flustered look remained. “I only wanted to say that if you really need someone...I mean, I can be there for you if you need it…”
I couldn't help but smile. “Thank you, Matt. That means a lot to me.”
He nodded, going back to cooking in silence.
“These are absolutely amazing,” I marveled as I ate beside Matt.
Oliver had come down from the library by now to eat with us by now. Haydn was up and had come down as well.
“These are really good, thank you Matt,” Haydn agreed.
