Joe Sebold's POV:
Ever since George told us what had happened with Elizabeth, we've all decided to apologise if we see her today, not just texting her. We all know how awful we each feel, I mean I had no idea that us just teasing her had that kind of effect on her. It really shocked all of us when George told us how Liz broke down in the library on Friday, we always thought she knew it was a joke, but clearly not. Anyway, now it's Monday and we're all waiting for the bell to go for first period. I've just apologised to Liz and watched Zach 'accidentally' bump into her, making excuses and making her laugh as she walks away. I jog over to them and slam my hands down on his shoulders.
"Hello? What was that little interaction Graye?" I question, raising an eyebrow at him.
"Uh nothing?" He retorts, plainly.
"I'm pretty sure that was you trying to flirt Zachary." I accuse jokingly. Slinging an arm over his shoulder as we begin to walk.
"And so what if it was?" He says smirking and walking.
"Well, I just hope you're prepared to be shut down and crushed. No one dates her. Trust me." I advice, knowing how Elizabeth doesn't just play hard to get, she doesn't even play.
"Yeah, well I bet I can get any girl, I bet I can get her." He announces proudly, quickening our pace.
"Oh really? Good luck Graye, good luck." And with that I take off, I slide into my English classroom and begin the next hours of hell.
-----
It's now lunch and everyone has sat down around one table, George, Zach, Max and myself. We all begin digging into the foods we have bought before I pipe up.
"So boys, Zachary over here believes that he can get any girl. And he even bets that he can get Ms Elizabeth Baker." I say patting him on the back.
"Really dude? You think you're that good?" George exclaims with both eyebrows raised in shock.
"Yes, yes I really do, if I say so myself." Zach boasts, smiling to himself, most likely about himself.
"You have yourself a bet there Graye!" George holds his hand out and Zach proceeds to shake whilst chuckling.
"Challenge accepted gentlemen. Challenge accepted. I don't know why you're all so certain I'll fail, I can easily make her laugh and smile, what else do I need to do?" Zach ponders.
"Oh she does that with literally every guy. She is super nice to you, but that never means she has an interest. I guess she's just a nice person or something." George says, slightly under his breath. As soon as that happens, we hear footsteps and high pitched giggles heading our way. We all turn our heads and as we do Zach begins speaking.
"Hey! Ladies, wanna come take a seat with us?" He calls, both Elizabeth and Charlie look at each other and shrug. Giving each other a look of 'what's the worst that could happen?'. They shuffle over as all us boys move up leaving to spaces opposite each other for the pair of them. Elizabeth seating herself next to Zach and Charlie next to her twin. When they are sat next to each other they actually look reasonably similar, the blonde hair is exactly the same and the natural glow of pink in their cheeks makes them resemble each other a lot.
"So Liz, how was the drama rehearsal?" Charlie asks sincerely.
"It was alright, but I wasn't paying much attention to what we were meant to be doing, I was just practising my own stuff." Elizabeth responds as we all listen intently.
"Were you practising what you were doing on-" Zach suddenly winces and shakes his head. "You know what? Never mind!" He suddenly stops his response and begins eating again as Elizabeth smiles to everyone and then glares at Zach. He begins muttering an apology to her that non of us can hear.
"Wait Liz you take drama?" Max furrows his eyebrows in a confused manner.
"Why of course I did! I'm all about the performing arts." She says rolling her eyes and laughing. "I was Rizzo in Grease last year in the production, remember?" She persists.
"Wait that was you?!" I screech, that was the best production the school has put on, no word of a lie.
"Yes...? I helped direct it as well." She says, but not in a boastful manner, more just as a fact. I can't believe that was her, everyone went insane when she sung. I remember it really well, we all stood up and begun clapping at the end.
"You direct? And act?" Zach asks, an impressed face crosses over his eyes.
"Yeah, I do sometimes. I enjoy it a lot." Elizabeth says, but still not making any deal about it. No fuss or nothing. Most girls we know would be dragging out the amazing things they do like there's no tomorrow. But Elizabeth just says it so matter of fact that it's like she is saying what she got for lunch.
"That's a pretty cool thing, kitten." Zach smirks and winks. And then proceeds to stab at his food with his fork.
"Thanks Graye. But it's not exactly huge." She says smiling, but still incredibly modest. What is it with this girl and not being able to be arrogant at all? It is really weird. But almost a nice relief.
"Is there anything you can't do?!" George demands it as if there must be something.
"Well I can't fly a rocket ship?" She retorts sarcastically before grinning and giggling. Her and Charlie begin to piss themselves with laughter until they realise we are still all staring at them. They both go a little red and begin to look flustered. And as they calm down they both look at each other and stand up in unison, how girls do that, I will never know.
They begin to walk out of the cafeteria as the rest of us push our chairs out and begin to follow them. In the least stalky way...I swear. But Zach shoves his stuff in the garbage and runs up behind both of the girls. They both jump, laugh and practically shoo him away. He slowly trots back to us and turns quickly, glancing at their backs as they turn the corner out of the cafeteria. No good bye or see you later. Just up and gone. Girls, am I right?
"Told you dude." Max says, in a 'I'm always right' sort of way.
"Early days Maxy my boy. Early days!" Zach exclaims with a glint of hope in his eye. "In the meantime though, there's a party on Thursday, who's coming?" He propositions, we all nod in agreement and decide to go to George's and leave from there.
Soon afterwards the bell goes for last period and we all file towards our classrooms.
None of us have seen the girls the since lunch, except George who lives with Charlie. But not even Zach can see Elizabeth through the window, it's a mystery where they go.
-----
The day was pretty average other than the strange occurrence at lunch and the mysterious disappearance of Liz and Charlie. We all make our own ways home and when I get back and slump down onto my bed my phone buzzes.
Zach: Dude, this one is gonna be hard to conquer.
Joe: Told you so. I wish you good luck in your challenge, but I can guarantee you will fail bro.
Zach: Clearly you don't know me well;) I told you. I can get any girl. Just wait and see.
Joe: I'll probably be 80 by the time you even get a hug from her. But whatever you wish.
Zach: You're optimistic.
Joe: No, I'm just realistic.
The conversation ended there. All I hope is that Zach doesn't do something stupid. I really do hope...
