Zach Graye's POV:
(Before 6 o'clock on Thursday evening)
I'm sliding on my shirt and jacket, running my hands through my dark hair in the mirror. Out of no where I hear a crash and a small brown headed creature charges through my door, rugby tackling my legs.
"ZAAACCHHH!" My little sister Sophie screams at me followed by a high pitched giggle.
"Hey you! How's your day been?" I pick her up in my arms and crash down with her into my bed, an explosion of giggles falls from her mouth. Her green eyes glimmer at me, full of mischievous ideas. Her mousy brown hair falls across her face as her tiny, little, cute hands brush it back behind her ears.
"Good! It was so good! Today we did more alphabet!" She grins widely, I smile back. Sophie is six years old, and despite everything is still the happiest child I've ever met, not to mention the cutest. Dad dying a year and a half ago really hit us all hard, we barely managed at the start and my mom was a mess and I don't blame her. They were inseparable and the love of each other's lives. I see his face in Sophie's a lot, they have the same face shape and noses. But she has my mom's freckles, although mom only has them in summer. Sophie has them all year round.
"More alphabet? Haven't you learnt that already?!" I ask, in a jokingly scolding manner. Her eyes fill with excitement as she begins speaking again.
"Yes. Yes I do know! But don't tell anyone this," She quietens her voice to a whisper and I move my ear towards her "I'm smarter than the rest of my class!" She then rolls over in fits of laughter. I forgot to mention, she shares the same amount of cockiness that I do, it must be genetics.
As she rolls over my bed, I begin tickling her tiny stomach which causes a high pitches scream and for her to start poking my ribs.
"Ow! No! You wound me, you wound me!" I put a hand to where she poked me and fall backwards, pretending to die.
"And the monster has been defeated!" She squeals in excitement and begins jumping up and down.
"Don't speak too fast! The monster is gonna get you!" I say as I pick her up in the air and whiz her around my room. We both land as gracefully as possible back on the bed, before I hear a small knock at my door. Both of our heads snap around and we stare at our mom who's standing by the door with a beaming smile across her face. She's been so much happier since the move, I think it's allowed her to move on more which is a relief for me, I couldn't bare to see her so distraught for much longer.
Mom walks over to my bed slowly before slumping herself down on the other side of Sophie, mom and I both turn and rest on our elbows staring at the little monster between us.
"Monster has back up now!" Mom screeches as we both tickle her until she is screaming in mercy. We all lay down, chests rising in an out of breathe state, laughing at the same time.
"Hey, I'm gonna be back late tonight, Soph is staying at her new friend's house, aren't you?" My mom begins, grinning at my younger sister. "So I've asked Liz's mom if you hang there until I come back this evening, cool?" She asks me, with an eyebrow raised.
"Sounds good to me!" I say as we all begin to stand up, mom plants a kiss on Sophie's head as I pick her up and she kisses my cheek as well.
"She's a nice girl, Liz. I like her Zach." She looks at me with a smile, but also a look of 'don't fuck this up for yourself Zachary." Because she, more than anyone, knows my reputation. She waltzes out of my room and Sophie looks at me with a confused look before I stick my tongue out at her and the kiss her forehead.
