Prompt: McCree x Reader fluff or angst

Jesse McCree. He was the last man you expected to angrily burst through the door of the asylum. It was an abandoned asylum, one where you were tied up and gagged, sitting against a brick wall where no one was meant to find you. You had been kidnapped on a raid by a local gang known as the one and only Deadlock gang. Of course Jesse would be here, but the rage in his eyes was unlike anything else when he noticed your terrified form in the corner.

"What the hell is this?" He shouted, stomping rather quickly towards you. "Y'all know better than this shit." He knelt beside you and carefully removed the gag from your mouth. The fear in your eyes was evident and you couldn't help but flinch when he raised his hand to lightly caress your check.

"She was a witness, McCree," one of the goons who had taken you defended himself. Internally you rolled your eyes at the man's ridiculous excuse. "Eliminate all witnesses, that's what you taught us!"

"No," McCree growled slightly. "I taught ya to kill male witnesses and set the ladies free. I especially did not teach ya to kidnap ladies." He turned his attention back to you and met your eyes with a type of care that was not there when he spoke to his partner. "Don't worry darlin', we're not gonna hurt ya."

That was the start of a crazy friendship between yourself and the cowboy. He took you under his wing in the Deadlock gang and occasionally took you on raids. You were there when he was approached by Gabriel Reyes. He convinced the leader of the Blackwatch to give you a position in the organization as well and you began training to become a true member of Overwatch, just like McCree.

On one mission, you had been badly injured by a rogue Bastion unit and lost one of your arms. Upon hearing this, Angela Ziegler, also known as Mercy, worked her way to your station and gave you a cyborg arm, much like she had done with Genji Shimada. You appreciated it beyond belief because it allowed you to continue working with Overwatch as you had done many years prior.

McCree, on the other hand, found your new arm incredibly endearing. Everyone always made the joke about you being McCree's left hand gal, since he was missing his left arm. He was your right hand man, since that was the arm you were missing. Jesse handled the jokes with pride, throwing his arm around you and laughing along with the crowd. That was the beginning of the school girl crush you had on him.

"(Y/N)," Jesse knocked lightly on your day, drawing your attention away from reliving the most important events in your life. "The team leaves in ten minutes, you ready to go?" He prompted softly. A small smile came to your lips, the sound of his voice alone lifting up his spirits. It was obvious to everybody except for the beloved cowboy himself that you had fallen head over heels for him.

"I'm always ready McCree," a wide smile broke out across your face and you quickly got to your feet. "Always ready." Despite the spring in your step and the gleam in your eyes, deep in the pit of your stomach you had a feeling that maybe not everything was going to go as smoothly as everyone anticipated.

You and the team headed off to the battlefield and stayed together as the plan had dictated. The plan, however, didn't provide any cautions as to what to do in the event of a bomb separating the team. You had gotten blown halfway across the city. Legs and arm badly burned, a shard of metal through your stomach, you were pinned to the ground. You cried out for what felt like hours, hoping someone would hear you, even if it was an enemy who could end your misery.

Eyes beginning to get heavy, you relaxed your body as much as you could. The thought began to cross your mind that maybe no one was even looking for you. Maybe you would die here, alone and cold and never having confessed your true feelings to the one man you loved.

"(Y/N)?" A soft voice called your name and you quickly realized it was Angela. "(Y/N)!" She rushed to your side, panic in her eyes like you had never seen before. She grasped your cold hand tightly in her warm ones before turning her head and crying out to Jesse.

"For a field medic," your voice was hoarse and it sounded distant from your body. "You certainly seem... Rather panicked... At the sight of... And injured soldier." You cracked a small smile and Mercy returned one with sorrow resonating from her eyes. The sound of spurs clanging approached you and you meekly raised your gaze to see McCree standing beside you.

"Oh hell," his voice was barely above a whisper but you managed to hear him. "Can you fix her?" Jesse turned his attention fully to Angela, pleading in his eyes and hope dripping off his words. She moved her gaze to you, pain stuck to her face as she slowly shook her head.

"There's nothing I can do for her now," her voice was somber but the words shook McCree's entire world. He dropped to his knee's beside you, taking your cyborg hand into both of his much larger ones. His eyes scanned your face and you could tell he was searching for words to say, anything to comfort you and comfort himself at the same time.

"(Y/N)," his voice wavered and he took a moment to clear his throat. "(Y/N), there's somethin' I need to tell ya. I love you, have since the moment ya lost your arm. I-I can't believe I couldn't bring myself to admit it and now I'm gonna lose ya." Tears began to drip down his cheeks, making their way to land on your clasped hands.

"I love you Jesse," tears flooded your own eyes and you squeezed his hands. "I should've said something sooner, anything before right now. Now, when I'm going to die, I get to share my last few minutes with you and nothing can save me." You hadn't even noticed that you, yourself, were crying until you felt Jesse's gloved hand swipe away a few tears.

"Don't cry, darlin'," he rubbed his own cheeks with the back of his hand before grasping yours again. "We're together right now and nothing is going to change that. I love you." He shifted himself slightly so your head was resting on his lap. His fingers slid through your mangled hair, comforting you to a magnificent extent. Your eyes began to feel heavy and they slowly closed. Your heart stopped beating. Your life ended in that moment.

McCree let out a heart breaking scream, tearing through the sky and piercing the heavens. The other Overwatch members felt their hearts stop and they all took a moment to mourn the lose of a great friend and amazing teammate. Jesse McCree was never the same after that day and he mourned his loss everyday. On missions he would turn to his left, ready to tell you a joke, only to have his  heart broken yet again as he remembered you were no longer with him.
