Not much is really known about Genji or his time in Blackwatch so if some of this seems out of character, my apologies.
Genji Shimada, one of the newest recruits to the Blackwatch organization lead by the infamous Gabriel Reyes. You took a shine to him almost immediately due to him being one of the strong, silent types. Of course, he was oblivious to any admiration you began to hold for him. He had turned himself into a completely different man after losing his body in the fight with Hanzo. You had heard the story from Mercy, who was a little hesitant to tell you at first.
The man in question was currently sitting half way across the room, staring blankly into a bowl of soup that had been served to keep the team warm. Since you were stationed in Ecopoint: Antarctica, Mercy insisted that something warm be given to you all to keep you safe. Genji was glaring at the bowl, as though it was heart wrenching for him to know that food wouldn't have the same effect on his body as it used to.
For a moment, you considered approaching him and trying to start a conversation, trying to draw his emotions out into the open. Of course, you knew what a ridiculous stunt that would be considering you only ever shared a few words with him and he always intentionally cut the conversation short. It felt as though he was ignoring you, trying to avoid you.
A slight grimace crossed your face and you decided to face the imminent rejection you knew was headed your way. Standing, you not so subtly began making your way over to where the cyborg was still glaring into the bowl of now cold soup.
"Hey Genji!" You shouted, trying to put on a happy facade, though it was fading quickly as you started seriously considering the recourse of your actions. "Have you tried the soup? It's pretty good. Those chefs did a wonderful job." All you got in return was a slight grunt as he lifted his eyes up to you.
"Is this some kind of twisted joke?" His voice was gruff, as though he hadn't spoken in a long time. "Do you get some kind of high off of reminding me that I cannot eat? That I cannot taste? And that I do not need this soup like the rest of you to keep myself warm?" Your eyes widened at his sudden outburst and you took a slight step backwards.
"Genji, no," you held your hands up, shaking them slightly as though it would defuse the situation. "That wasn't it at all, I didn't even realize that you couldn't- well that you can't- I'm so sorry Genji."
"It is fine, (Y/N)," he looked down at the bowl of soup again, staring aimlessly into it as he sought out his next words carefully. "It is not like anyone has ever taken the time to truly understand what my new life is like. No one seems to care." These words took you by even more surprise than his original outburst. Not only was he carrying on a conversation with you, but he was even opening up about his emotions.
"I'm here Genji," you immediately took a seat beside him, peering intently at his face even though he wouldn't look to you. "I'm here to listen and bear whatever pain you're feeling with you. I want to know, I want to help." He stayed silent and for a moment you pondered if the offer was a stupid choice. You were about to say something, anything to end the silence between you two but he spoke first.
"Why are you so," he paused for a moment, mulling over his words carefully before carrying on with his sentence. "Caring? This world is so bleak, so full of people who will draw the life from you and use it for their own gain. In a world like this, how do you stay so kind?"
"I see the good in people," you didn't miss a beat as you answered his questions. "Just because someone does something bad doesn't mean they're a bad person. They made a mistake and if there is truly good in them, they'll regret their mistake. Sure, some people in this world are horrible, soul sucking monsters, but would good deeds matter if there were no bad deeds to balance them?"
"You are truly one of a kind," he looked up, his amber eyes peering into yours as though he could see your soul. "I have noticed something about you, you can be the judge of it is good or bad in your eyes but to me, it is good. I have noticed that you stare at me. I am choosing to see the good in you and so I want to ask, why?" A small blush rose to your cheeks at his question and you cast your gaze downwards.
"I stare," a sigh left your lips and you closed your eyes, clasping your hands in your lap to escape the jittery feeling in your heart. "I stare because I like you and I want to get to know you better." You didn't dare raise your eyes, but when you heard laughter from the man beside you, you couldn't help but snap your head up. Genji was laughing, not sarcastically or in a demeaning way, but a real genuine laugh.
"I like you too, (Y/N)," he looked deep into your eyes and took one of your hands into his own. "Perhaps you can help me come to terms with my new life, my new body. Perhaps you can be my light."
