Living in the forest as its guardian was a pretty amazing life to live, if you were being honest. You often found yourself getting to terrify kids who thought it was cool to carve into trees and that made it all well worth it to you. There were the occasions where it was weird to be the guardian of the forest because of something the humans called a "controlled burn". Basically, they would set fire to the brush in the forest to keep it from becoming a fire hazard. It was a strange concept but you supposed in the long run it made sense.
Then, there was the ninja. He was a very interesting character who you had never built the nerve to speak with. He would walk into the forest with deliberation and straight to a clearing. He never strayed from this pattern. Then, he would sit cross legged and stay silent. You swore sometimes it didn't even appear as though he was breathing. He would do this for hours at a time before getting back to his feet and leaving the same way he had come. It confused you every time he did it and so finally, you decided to confront him about it.
As he sat, like he always did, you slowly walked from the edge of the forest and stopped directly in front of him. You weren't even sure if he spoke English, which was the only human language you knew fluently.
"What are you doing?" You forced yourself to ask, your hands behind your back to try and show that you were nothing to be feared. He slowly lifted his head and you could see that he was wearing a mask of some sort to hide his face. Suddenly, you became very aware of how strange you probably looked to this man. Wearing a dress of leaves, your hair tied in braids that showed off your elf ears, he was probably either disgusted or confused. This was a terrible idea, you scolded yourself.
"I am meditating," he answered calmly before putting his head back down. Now you were even more curious. You didn't know what meditating was and you certainly didn't know why he was so calm at your appearance. Deciding to continue being brave, you sat down in front of him, studying him carefully as he 'meditated'. What sounded like a soft chuckle came through the mask.
"Are you going to sit there and stare at me the whole time?" He asked, keeping his voice quiet. Meditating must be a silent action, you told yourself. And it's not like I don't watch you every other day. Today you just happen to know.
"How do you meditate?"
"Do elves not meditate?" He lifted his head as he asked and you reeled back slightly in shock.
"You know what I am?"
"Well yes," he laughed again, uncrossing his legs and sitting in a more comfortable position. "Elves are quite common in different folklore."
"What's folklore?"
"It is stories that people tell each other for many many years," he explained patiently. This robot-ninja-man was by far the most intriguing person you had ever seen in this forest and the more he spoke of human customs, the more curious you were.
"What is your name?"
"My name is Genji," he went from sitting up to laying back in the grass. You shuffled slightly so you were sitting by his head. "What's your name."
"(Y/N)."
"That's a very pretty name for a very beautiful elf," he replied smoothly, causing a soft blush to coat your cheeks.
"What are elves like in human stories?"
"Well," he paused, thinking of how to explain it for a moment. "They are often in forests, kind of like fairies but human sized. They are often beautiful, elusive and have those very adorable pointy ears." With one hand, he reached up and gently touched your ear. Something about his touch sent a feeling tingling through your body. You never had many interactions with men, considering you guarded this forest alone and as such had never met any male elves. And most of the men who traveled through the forest were hunters who you tended to avoid.
"Why do you wear a mask?"
"Umm," Genji seemed hesitant, obviously not expecting you to ask such a question. He swallowed hard, clearing his throat before explaining. "My body is made up of mostly cybernetics instead of human flesh. I was attacked when I was younger and it was the only way to keep my alive, so I wear the mask to hide my very scarred appearance." A hush fell over you as you listened to his story. It was heartbreaking to hear that someone who seemed so genuinely kind would be treated in such a way.
"Can," you paused, not even sure if you should ask considering you just met this man for the first time after watching him countless times. "Can I see what you look like?" He didn't respond for a second and didn't make a move to take off the mask. You worried for a moment that you had upset him.
"I'm sorry," you quickly apologized. "That was out of line and I shouldn't have asked." He reached out of grasped one of your hands in his own, giving it a gentle squeeze before letting go. He moved both hands to the sides of his mask and pressed two release buttons, letting it disconnect from the rest of the head piece. He removed it from his face and an audible gasp left your lips as his appearance.
His face was littered with scars, yes, but his rugged handsomeness was undeniable. A small bit of his black hair jutted out from the top of the head piece and his brown eyes were still shining with a vibrancy you had never known before.
"You shouldn't hide your face," you muttered shyly, tucking a stray piece of hair behind your ear as you averted your gaze from him. "You are the most handsome man I have ever seen walk into this forest." Again, he remained silent, yet he did not put his mask back on. A few moments passed.
"No one has told me I look handsome since I received these scars," he confessed to you, sitting up beside you and looking into your eyes. "I am viewed as a monster by those I meet. Being half human, half robot does not sit well in a world filled with hatred for those different than them."
"I am seen as a monster too," you gently took one of his hands into yours. "But you are not a monster to me." He gave your hand a soft squeeze, a charming smile decorating his face as he looked at you.
"And you are not a monster to me either."
