We had been driving for about 5 minutes in complete silence, I hoped it would stay like that because uncomfortable silence is better than awkward small talk, but that didn't happen
"You didn't tell me it was your birthday" Dan pulled the birthday card that was in my bag out and began looking at it
"I didn't think that you cared, since we stopped being friends 4 years ago" my tone was hostile, Dan just sighed placing the card back into my bag,
"I'm sorry about that" he sounded generally sad adding to my confusion "so, what are you doing for your birthday?"
"Well my parents are away with work, like usual, so I'm inviting my friends over for a night in"
My parents spend more time on work trips then they do at home, I've gotten used to being alone and living by myself, they give me money while they are away to buy food and money for anything I could need and occasionally will call or text to make sure I'm still alive, although I'm sure they wouldn't really be affected if I wasn't.
"Oh cool, when do your parents get back?"
"Well they are never really back, but next Friday, for the weekend before they leave again" I hated talking about my parents
"When were they last home?"
"Dan, can we not talk about my parents? Please, in fact can we just not talk at all? I really hate small talk"
"Oh, sorry"
Dan seemed different to how he has been recently, almost like how he used to be before high school and popularity were his priorities. We spent the rest of the car ride in silence, we eventually pulled into the car park of the school, as soon as the car stopped I got out and gear Dans friends whistling and hooting at Dan, I rolled my eyes and began to walk away
"Thanks for the lift" I said quickly to Dan before walking past his group of friends towards my smaller group of friends by the doors of school.
