That year acting club auditions were weird, the core told us that when we sign up we'll have to be with a partner. Obviously cause Clair's already core, I asked Kate if she would audition with me. After being friends for this long, it's about time.
We went to the club boards at snack time and we saw a HUGE line to the acting club board. The core were there with a little box and people were picking. We had no idea why, but we still signed up. We wrote our names on the list and we read the instructions. The reason why we had to have a partner is that you and your pair are randomly assigned 2 characters and it's your job to make a scene. I was so scared seeing the other options we had. I reached into the box and pulled out a tiny piece of paper. I jumped a bit before i rolled the paper open. I looked down and the paper said "Lilo and Stitch". My brain froze for a bit then I snapped back into consciousness.
I quickly rushed over to the singing club board to sign up for the first slots so that Kate and I would have time to practice before the audition. I stared at the dance club board for about 5 minutes then I decided to write my name in the last time slots of the auditions.
After I got back from signing up, Kate and I talked for a bit of how we wanted to do it. Fortunately, I had a blue dress and a Stitch hat which I have no idea where I got. So I was playing Stitch. We had absolutely no idea what to do. Knowing the both of us, we didn't really want anything that would be crazy and humiliate us. But what Kate didn't know was that I was that so desperate to be core that even though I was completely uncomfortable playing Stitch, I knew I had to go for it for a chance to stand out.
We decided on a simple skit focusing on the scene where Lilo teaches Stitch about life and stuff like that. Kate did the main script then I helped with the blocking and the bringing of props. The script was finished on the Thursday, the day before we were performing. It felt a bit awkward especially because it was completely out of my comfort zone to act like a crazy alien. We didn't have time to practice so we had to make do with practicing for the first time the morning of the audition. We thought after a few practices that as long as we knew our lines (mine was practically just actions and weird noises) it was ok to wing it.
When time for the auditions came, I headed straight for the singing club and finished my audition quickly. I ran to get changed into my blue dress so Kate and I could have our last practice before our audition. One of the pairs we saw were Alicia and Gabi. I wasn't paying much attention this morning but from what I hear, they're doing Dory and Marlin from Finding Nemo. I was too awkward to walk up and talk to them so I just waited for the audition. When we walked in, they were surprised the number of props we brought. We started our skit. I was cringing on the inside because of my forced role but I knew that if I wanted to be core, I had to show them that I could be versatile. I walked out of that room embarrassed but I knew I had to move on.
Kate went home as she only auditioned for 2 clubs. I made my way to the other class' room and started practicing. Well not exactly practice because I had no idea what I was performing. O didn't even have a song picked out. I looked for a random song on my phone and I just settled with "Brave" by Sara Bareilles but I was so worried. I'm a "self-taught ballet dancer" and haven't had proper training in the longest time. I thought of the rudimentary steps to the song when Yanna walks in with her brother. Her brother is part of the dance club core and he was helping her with her audition. I was there dying in the corner. I kept trying to choreograph the entire song but people kept barging in. I finally got some peace and quiet when the door bursts open and Yanna's head pops through. "Megan" she said. " Are you still going to audition?" Obviously I said yes because I didn't want to waste my time stressing over this whole thing and not do anything. "Well... they just finished all the auditions you better head down fast." WHAT?!?!? I was waiting for my time slot then apparently not much people auditioned that year so many slots were skipped. I collected my things and ran down the stairs as fast as I could. The assembly area was empty so I looked around. I saw the core inside one of the classrooms and I decided to knock. In my teacher voice (a special voice used to sound more "gentle" and not to "disrespect" the teachers with my tone) I apologized that I wasn't at the assembly area when they were calling people and asked if it was still possible to audition. They said yes and I set up my music. The first 10 seconds of the routine were badly choreographed then the rest of the 2 minutes was purely made up. I kept trying to comfort myself through the entire routine by telling myself that they wouldn't notice that I was running out of moves in my head. I decided to just stop and say thank you before the song even ended just to save myself from humiliation. They asked a couple of questions. I said it was my 2nd choice and walked out of the room.
