DESIREE

"As a person, which means you may answer outside of your government position... what is your greatest achievement?", I asked as I stood behind my tripod while Kib was comfortably seated on a single sofa here in their living room.

There was a serious look on his face as he rubbed his chin.

"Hmmm... Siguro yung napasagot ko yung girlfriend ko without getting her number.", he then answered, smirking.

"Kapal mo! Sinong nagsabing sinagot na kita?", taas-kilay kong tanong.

"Well, you didn't answer. Silence means yes.", he said as-a-matter-of-factly.

Grrrrr, bakit ba kasi di ako nakasagot nun eh.

I only shook my head at him.

"Promise, mag-seseryoso na ako.", he then said and smiled warmly. He even raised his right hand, making me smile back.

Actually, in fairness sa kanya, sa isang oras naming pag-film ng interview, ngayon lang naman siya nagbiro tungkol sa amin. He's been straightforward in answering all my questions except for this last one.

I focused the camera on him and nodded, urging him to speak.

"Greatest achievement ko... To serve the people. It's something I could do even without being in my position, but I'm thankful for being here, kasi mas malaki yung nagagawa ko para sa kanila.", Kib said truthfully. "I could've stayed somewhere else, say in Manila. But I love La Union. Hindi ko naman 'to babalikan kung hindi ko 'to mahal."

Once again, he tugged the strings of my heart. It's easy to be blinded by power and money, but Kib remained to be that unselfish, loving guy, and that made the people love him back.

I pressed the button to stop recording then stared straight at him.

"Thanks, Gov.", I said.

"May bayad yun.", bigla niyang sabi.

"Excuse me lang ah, tinalo kaya kita sa surfing competition.", I reminded him.

"Pero you backed out from the deal, remember? O, wala nang bawian this time.", he smirked.

Ugh!

"Fine, ano gusto mo?", I asked, surrendering.

Kib stood in front of me and held my left hand.
