"You aren't fighting." Steve said as he helped me tighten my uniform Tony had gifted me.

"But I have been training for years Steve. I've fought hundreds of times before... Why not now?" I asked.

"I don't want to see you get hurt." He sighed, grasping my hand and rubbing soothing circles on the back of it.

"That hasn't stopped previous missions. Solo missions. Team missions."

"You were under direct orders for those. I couldn't stop you going. I-" he started.

"Steve. You gave me some of those missions. Yes, not all but you still gave me them."

Steve sighed and dropped his head in defeat.

"What is really troubling you?" I asked, dipping his cheek to return his gaze to mine.

I was captivated by those blue eyes. They were the first things about Steve that caused me to fall head over heels.

...

But I wouldn't have it any other way.

"You value Tony too much like a father. H-" he started.

"Don't go there Steve. You know how much Tony has been there for me. Before you. Before the Avengers.... He was there." I countered.

"I know. And I am grateful for all he has done for you, for us.... Even if people think he is selfless and egotistical but he has shown me just how wrong peoples perceptions can be. I just don't want to lose you. And for Tony to lose you too."

"Oh Steve. Neither of you are going to lose me." I smiled softly, stroking his cheek fondly.

He offered a small smile, leaning into my hand.

"I love you." He murmured, gazing deeply into my eyes.

My heart fluttered. No matter how often he reminds me... My heart still somersaults.

"I love you too." I smiled, pressing a kiss to the corner of his mouth before Clint entered the room.

"They are in formation." He told Steve, sending a brief nod to me before retreating.

"If things go bad... Find Nat. She will protect you." Steve said, cupping my face with both of his hands.

"I can protect myself."

"Please promise me." He asked, his voice strained.

"I promise."

He leant down to my smaller height and pressed his lips to mine. As if he knew something was going to happen...

"______!" Tony shouted after me as I ran onto the airport runway.

"Tony please. Please stop this." I begged as he flew down to where I stood and lowered his helmet.

"He didn't sign... You didn't sign... After everything I have done for you." Betrayal laced his voice and shone heavily in his eyes.

My heart dropped.

I never wanted to hurt anyone.

"Tony-" I started.

"Don't! Your on the wrong side. Don't you see."

"I didn't want to choose sides... But how could I just leave him. It was hard enough turning away from your views... But please you know Steve wouldn't go this far if what he believed in wasn't true. You know him!"
