Chapter 4: Josie's POV

Although I didn't buy anything while I was at the mall, these Key brothers were cute! Hopefully I run into them more this summer. After I came back from the mall, mom immediately forced me to clean the house.

"Sweetie, you forgot to dust the railings!" I heard mom say as I was secretly on my phone, checking Instagram. "Ok, I'm getting there." I grabbed the duster, shoved my phone in my pocket, and dusted the railings. I looked over the catwalk and saw my siblings on their IPads playing Angry Birds or what not. "Hey! Shouldn't they be doing work, today is chore day for them too!" I yelled down in anger, as my siblings were her favorite. "Well, Justin already did the dishes, and Kaylee took out the trash." Mom said. Justin and Kaylee, being 10 year-old twins looked up and stuck their tongues out at me. "But..." I started hoping I could have a smart remark in mind. "Josephine, no buts! You are 19, almost 20 and you have to become more responsible! Now clean your room!" Mom yelled, almost as furious as when Dad left for good, she was always afraid of losing me. "I should've moved out a long time ago." I thought to myself in anger. Maybe I can...

Yesterday was terrible, the rest of the day was just chores, chores and more chores. Can a teenager have a free-life? Maybe today can be my free-day. Mom's interviewing for a 3rd job, Justin and Kaylee are at a friend's house (lucky them) and I'm here. I took out my phone and checked the weather. 89?! Geez, I'm going to melt in here we hardly have air-conditioning. Then an idea went off in my brain, the pool! Today would be perfect for the pool, but I can't go alone, well, maybe Hannah's free. I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and texted Hannah. "Hey, wanna go to the pool today?" I texted. Hannah didn't take long at all to respond, "Of course, I'm practically melting. I'll come over in 15 minutes! :)" I quickly typed, "Sweet," and ran upstairs. I tossed my phone on my bed and opened my swim suits drawer. It felt like all of them had exploded onto my floor. I quickly picked them up and shoved them back in the drawer. I found my favorite bathing suit, a cute floral 2- piece, and put it on along with a cute cover-up. I threw all the essentials into a bag and ran downstairs just as the doorbell rang. "Ready to go?"

Hannah asked seeing that I was pathetically out of breath, I straightened myself and said, "Ready as ever."

When we arrived at the pool, it was kinda packed, with a lot of kids starting to splash each other with water. We set our stuff down at two chairs and decided to dip our toes in the water. Hannah wanted to do much more though. Instead of sitting down and feeling the water, she jumped right into the water. She executed an amazing dive straight into the deep end and I just stand there in awe. "How did you do that?" I ask. She chuckles and says, "I've been swimming since I was a little kid." At that point I realize that I haven't been swimming in a while. I've had to keep up with a job, taking care of my siblings, and dreaded school. Hopefully I don't mess this up. "Come on in, it'll be fun!" Hannah said. "Ok, I'll give it a try." I said, backing up a bit to get a good running start. I start to run, and I start to near the edge of the pool. Before I can jump, a pool toy catches me by surprise and I slip and fall into the pool. I begin to panic and forget how to swim. I hear Hannah saying something, but it is muffled out because I begin sinking to the bottom of the pool. I assumed the lifeguard couldn't save me because she was talking to all the boys at the pool. Before the world goes dark someone picks me up and lays me on the poolside. "Hey! Are you ok?," The blurry vision says. I cough out some water and I hear multiple other voices. As my vision begins to clear I realize who saved me. The boy we saw at the mall, Devan Key, his face looked worried as he examined my nervous face. "I'm fine," I say as I become a little dizzy standing up. I hear Hannah behind me saying, "Oh Josie, why didn't you tell me you couldn't swim?" "I can swim," I say defensively, trying to look good in front of Devan. "It's just, it's been awhile." Devan chuckles a bit, which makes me blush. "Hey what's going on..." A boy says, who appears to be Devan's brother, Collins. "Devan, what happened?" Collins asked, elbowing Devan playfully. "I saved um..." Devan starts, implicitly asking my name. I respond, "Josie." "I saved Josie from drowning!" Devan says, proudly, obviously trying to impress. "Nice job, bro!" Collins says rubbing Devan's hair, as Devan tries to brush it back. "Oh and by the way, I'm Collins. I didn't catch your name." Collins says, gesturing to Hannah who is standing behind me. "I'm Hannah," She's says nervously. She gave a tiny wave and stepped back behind me. "We should hangout sometime," Devan said to me. "Yea," Collins said in agreement. So after all of us exchanged phone numbers and Hannah and I went home in pure excitement.
