I am so excited! My birthday is in a week! I just cannot wait! I'm going to turn 20! But for the most part, I know exactly what I want for my bday, a puppy. But when I asked my mom she replied, "Honey, we just can't afford that, I can barely afford you." I was kinda heartbroken, but I had to understand that mom was doing her best to take care of all of us.
Devan and I were at the mall once and there is one store there that sells puppies and we nearly spent half our time there. "Look Devy! Look how cute it is!" I said, looking at a tiny Pomeranian. He just smiled and put his hands in his pockets. "Don't you think it's cute?" I asked. "Of course," he said. I had a weird feeling that he was hiding something, or maybe I was hungry.
We walked out of that place before I was going to get attached to all the animals in their. We went to the food court cause I supposed that hunger was the source of my suspiciousness. I got tacos and Devan got the same. We sat down and started eating when I noticed the same familiar, cringy face. Clifton.
Can this guy get out of my life? I thought to myself when he walked in the same direction as we are. Wow he got a girl! That's a one in a million chance! I tried to hide myself, but it was too late. "Oh, hi!" He said in a fake sweet voice. "Hi." I said, sternly trying not to make eye contact. "What do you want?" Devan asked, almost as stern as I was. "Calm down, buddy. I'm just here to introduce you to my new girlfriend, Ashley." Clifton said, as Ashley gave a timid wave. "So you're not into the pre-arranged marriage anymore?" I said. "No, I learned to move on to better things." He said hugging Ashley and glaring at me. "That's nice, well we have to go," I say, trying to get out of the awkward conversation. "Bye, nice to meet you!" Ashley said, she seemed nice, but I don't know how she ended up with Clifton. "He must be really desperate." Devan said as we walked away. "Yea," I replied. Devan and I walked out of the mall, and I was glad just to get out of there.
Soon enough, it was the night before my birthday. I was so excited! Tomorrow was going to be my 20th birthday. Hannah, Collins, Devan, they were all going to be there. Collins managed to get out of the hospital early just to get to my birthday, isn't that sweet! I hope mom wasn't just gonna get me really old books like she did last year. This year feels different anyways, she might actually treat me like an adult. I tried to fall asleep quickly so that tomorrow would come quicker, but it didn't. I was kept awake by anxiety, that something bad would happen. Eventually once I started reading a book, I fell asleep.
I was awaken suddenly by my siblings jumping on my bed and yelling, "It's your birthday! You're 20!" I threw multiple pillows at them but they would not cease. "Just let me sleep in!" I yelled back. "Your friends are coming over soon! It's 11 already!" Kaylee yelled back. I jerked up-right and quickly pushed my siblings out of my room so I could get ready. "Oh gosh, what do I wear?" I frantically said to myself. I just yanked multiple dresses off my hangers and tried them on till I find the perfect one. Then finally I found one, just a simple black and white striped dress. Today's your day. I thought to myself as I saw my reflection in my foggy mirror.
I ran downstairs when my whole morning routine was over, but when I got down there everything was dark. No screaming siblings, that's a first. "Hello?" I said in the darkness as my voice bounced around the house. I sat down and wondered where everyone was. Then after a couple minutes of awkward, dark silence, the lights turned on and everyone yelled, "Surprise!" I nearly fell out of my chair. Devan caught my chair before I completely fell to the floor. "Happy birthday," he said as he propped my chair back up. I smiled as they lit up a cookie cake in front of me. They sung "happy birthday" to me like the old times, and I blew out my candles. Then we went straight to opening presents. Devan left before I opened my first present though.
When I was finished with all my presents, Devan still wasn't back. "Guys, where's Devan?" I ask. "Uh, restroom I think.." Collins said. "For this long?" I ask. Just then, Devan walks in the door. "Where have you been?" I ask. He was hiding something. "Getting this." he says as an adorable corgi burst from behind Devan. "Happy birthday! I hope you like her." He exclaims. I immediately melt. "I love her!!" I say, getting on my knees to cuddle her. "Got any idea of what to name her?" Collins asked. "Hmm, how about....Waffles!" I say excitedly. "Aww!" Hannah gushes. "What a cute name!" she says. "Thanks" I say happily, admiring Waffles fuzzy coat.
Everyone headed out the door except for Devan. "Hey, can I ask you something real quick?" he asked, closing the front door. "Sure" I reply, picking up Waffles as she nibbles my finger a bit. "How'd you like to go on a Royal Caribbean Cruise with my family and I?" Devan asks. "Of course! But...what about Waffles?" I ask, stroking her soft fur. "Collins will take care of her." Devan said, holding my hand. "He's not going?" I ask. "Naw, he'll stay here with Hannah." I smile and lean on Devan's shoulder. "Thanks for inviting me!" I say. I kiss him on the cheek and stand up from sitting and set Waffles down. I send Devan off and look over to see Waffles chewing on one of my shoes. This dog needed some training, and fast.
