Ch. 24, Part 2
I hate to be a downer on this Thursday of November 24th aka Thanksgiving, but let's take a moment to remember the indigenous people who lost their lives. History books paint the picture of Pilgrims & Native Americans being besties passing around plates. Let's just forget about the pillage, murder & rape. Shoutout to Abraham Lincoln for declaring it a holiday later. Somehow things always change over time in America. Bad turns to good. Guess it's okay to rewrite history. Anyway, enjoy your turkey & family today.
-Z.D.I sit in the drivers seat of my car parked in front of my Aunt Ramatulai's new house that she got with her fiancé, Gozie, in Georgetown East Village. It was a huge house, so I knew it at least cost a couple million. Houses like this weren't cheap in D.C. Houses in D.C. were pricey overall. I was happy for my aunt though. I couldn't wait for her to get married and have little chocolate babies. "But stay woke!" Nubia sings loudly from the passenger seat to the song Redbone by Chidlish Gambino. It had been on repeat since he put it out a week ago. "Stay woke, honey!" She says looking into the visor mirror putting lip gloss on.
Ever since we started going to Howard our freshman year, I've brought Nubia and Sahara with me to my aunts for Thanksgiving. No point in being by yourself on a holiday because you can't go home to be with your family. Hey, Nubia and Sahara are my family. Sahara and my sister, Ziya. are already here because they went somewhere together earlier and it was close by. I was surprised they got along because in high school, Ziya annoyed her just as much as me.
"My peanut butter chocolate cake with Kool-Aid. I'm trying not to waste my timeee," she sings next doing a body roll. "Yesss!"
I laugh then ask, "What has you in such a good mood?"
"Whatchu mean? It's a good day and I'm about to eat good food with good drinks and good people."
"Mhm, and you must'a got some good dick last night."
Her mouth falls open then she laughs saying, "You right." She sticks her tongue out smiling to herself. "I guess I should tell you.." I raise my brow at her statement then she continues, "You know how Israel and I made up or whatever. Well, we decided to seal the deal."
