As I walked down the aisle towards the runway that held my plane, my nerves finally got to me. A few tears leaked out of my burning eyes, even after I had roughly rubbed them down, trying my hardest to conceal my watery eyes.
At least you aren't wearing makeup.
Shut up, mind.
"Ma'am, are you okay?" A small voice called from behind me. I whirled around on my herl, expecting some annoying flight attendant or something, but I was met by a petite girl. She seemed to be around the age of eight, maybe a year or two younger. The girl had bright blond pigtails that fell below her shoulders in tight curls, two cotton candy pink bows tying them off, and a plain pink dress on, the white lace trim falling just below her bruised knees. She was clutching a cloth doll to her chest, the face and body hidden behind the girl's arms, and to finish her look she had on a miniature blue backpack strapped to her back. Pins and ribbons were everywhere on the light blue fabric, only small spaces being left open to show off the faded fabric. The girl stared up at me with her big green eyes, which made me want to take a few steps back. She kept looking at me as I wiped my eyes furiously and took a deep breath.
"I am fine, but thank you. Now, where are your parents?" I asked as I looked around the almost empty terminal. The girl laughed softly, her smile showing that she lacked a few teeth.
"I am going to be meeting them in Maine. Where are your parents?" She asked sweetly as she swung her arms and fell in step with me.
"Back at my house. They are sending me off so I can attempt to have a semi normal life." I stated quietly as I handed the flight attendant my boarding pass. The little girl continued to follow quietly behind me, and even though I didn't know her name I felt somehow attracted to her.
"Do you have a seat buddy?" I asked as I boarded the plane and took my seat in the middle rows. The little girl shook her head gently, just hard enough for little wisps of blond to fall out of the ribbons and fall into her eyes.
"Well, would you like to be mine?" I asked softly as I shifted my backpack off of my back and set it on the aisle floor.
"Please." She squeaked as she gripped her doll tightly in the crease of her elbow. I let out a laugh and then gestured towards the two empty seats.
"Window or row?" I asked, my hand still outstretched.
"Row please. I really don't like windows, they show us what is real even if you don't want to, and I really don't want to see everything right now." A deep kid I guess. I shuffled quickly into the window seat and threw my backpack under the seat in front of me, the bad barely fitting under the rough blue fabric seat.
"So, what's your name?" I asked politely as she stuck her backpack under the seat in front of her before propping herself up in her seat.
"I'm Lizzy." Lizzy said in a playful voice as she unzipped her bag and began riffling around.
"I'm Evelyn, it's very nice to meet you." I said as I slid my phone out of my pocket. I had turned it off last night for obvious reasons and I now had over 1000 texts.
