ethan.

i smelled the familiar scent of fire, or something burning.

i turn around the corner of an old school building, the sight of a boy with a lighter and an old burning blanket by his feet catching my eye.

the sounds of sobs escaping his mouth fill my ears, instantly drowning me in sadness.

"h-hello?" i ask, inching closer to him.

the boy jumps and turns around, clearly surprised by my presence.

"i-" i sigh, "i'm sorry" i hang my head and glance over at him.

"uh, no, it's okay" he smiled slightly, wiping his nose.

"im just burning this" he looks over to the blanket "this uh blanket"

"why?"

"it was something my dad gave me and i don't want to think about my dad anymore. it brings me too much pain" he sighs, still looking at the blanket that slowly burned.

i nod and walk closer, picking up the lighter. he gives me a confused look as a take a faded picture out of my jacket pocket.

"it's a picture of me and my ex. we broke up a year ago and i think i need to move on. the thought of him haunts me" i explain.

"him?"

"yeah" i reply, lighting it on fire and throwing it to the ground, "him."

we both sit by the pile of burning memories, feeling the heat of the fire press against our skin.

"im grayson" he speaks up, glancing over at me.

"ethan" i smile as i look at his facial features.

"believe it or not, you helped me today. so thank you" he murmurs, smiling weakly as his eyes travel back to the burning blanket.

"no problem"
