"How is she?"
"Still nothing. How is Sofia?"
"She's OK. She misses you...we both do" I say softly, brushing Sofia's hair with my fingers as her head rests on my shoulder. It's been 4 days since Eliza got on a plane to be with her family and we still don't know what's going on with Frankie.
"I miss you too" Eliza sighs, "I know I said I'd only be a couple of days-"
"She's family Eliza, take as long as you need"
"Thank you"
"But do you want to do me a favor?"
"Mmm?"
"There's something for you at the main reception"
"What is it?"
"Go find out" I wake Sofia up quietly and she stretches out before hopping off my lap and holding my knee.
"It better be coffee"
"You don't drink coffee" I say softly. I hear elevator doors open in her end and she sighs.
"I'm so tired I would make an exception, why couldn't you send it to the 4th floor reception?"
"Cause I didn't know what floor you were on and you need to move your legs, you probably haven't left that seat in 4 days"
"What if she doesn't wake up?"
"Don't go there" I say softly as I see the elevator doors open. "Just come give me a hug" She looks up, smiling when she sees me and I raise my eyebrows quickly as Sofia runs over to her.
I end the call and follow Sofia. Eliza picks Sofia up and kisses her cheek as I join them just outside the elevator.
"Hi" She whispers, letting me hug her. "What are you doing here?"
"I had to see you. Plus you said you needed me"
"I love you" I kiss her temple. "God I've missed you"
"Ditto baby. Callie went out of town and I didn't know how long I'd be so I brought Sof along. That's OK right?"
"It's perfect, thank you" I smile and pull back. "I know you said I didn't have to, but I found it and had to" I look up at her curiously and she pulls a box out of her pocket and hands it to me. I open it and gasp, tears forming in my eyes instantly when I see the diamond ring with a silver band, a teal line engraved along the band.
"It's perfect. Thank you" I kiss her softly and she puts it on my finger before taking my hand and pulling me into the elevator. "So what is Sofia meant to call your parents?"
"Mom will say Nana but it's up to Sof and you"
"I think Nana sounds good. Sof?" She doesn't answer and I look at her and smile softly when I realize she's asleep again "She hasn't been sleeping properly since you haven't been there to tuck her in"
"Oh Sof" Eliza tightens her hold on Sofia and my hand as we leave the elevator.
"What are the doctors saying?"
"Gibberish that only Eliza understands" Veronica sighs "Oh and you, I forget you're dating a surgeon Eliza"
"Veronica"
"What? I'm just saying Mom"
"Ignore her"
"This must be Sofia" Eliza's Mom smiles, watching Eliza kiss Sofia's head.
"Let her sleep" Eliza sighs protectively, moving Sofia out of her moms reach.
"God you need a reality check Eliza. This isn't going to last"
