I sit up suddenly. I didnt get ghosted? I wipe the cold sweat from my forehead and the tears from my cheeks.
Everyone went against me and I got ghosted.
My dreams normally warn me when something is about to happen so I have to be wary. My chest rises and falls dramatically as I calm myself down. Im not dead yet, its okay.
I stand up, dizzy at first, and adjust my hair. When I think it feels good I remove the chair from the door, I have to get out at some point. I wait a moment, wiping the tears from my face before pulling the lock and opening the door.
I open the door to bright light and I squint. Everyone is asleep. I tip toe up to the counter, sitting down and opening a can of energy. Slowly spooning it into my mouth, I take my time eating. Its quiet and I relax myself to the sounds of the guys snoring.
Someone puts their hands on my shoulders and I scream, not a small girly one, but a terrifying blood curdling one. I hear someone in their bed shout and someone else gasp. I turn around and slap Gees arm.
"Fuck you!" I whisper harshly.
"You woke them." He says, smirking.
I wait for him to talk to me and apologise but we sit in silence instead.
Eventually I look up from my can, making quick eye contact, before standing and dropping the empty can in the bin.
"Wake guys!" Gee yells. "Five minutes. Shoot out down the road!"
Ef rolls onto the floor with a thud before running to get changed. He is followed by MK and Ar.
I turn my attention back to Gee, or maybe just his body. His arms are crossed on the table, peeking out through the sleeveless vest of his pajamas. He looks pretty sturn and is frowning slightly. I sigh, rushing to change.
Moments later we are all packed into the car, steaming down the road, guns in hand. I forgot to get a new gun. It doesnt matter, I dont try hard enough, apparently.
"Hey, I dont have a gun because I dont try hard enough..." I say.
Ef grins oddly at me, placing the silver gun in my hand.
"Thanks." I murmur.
Down the road I see 2 Killjoys fighting a lot of dracs. I jump out of the car before it has fully stopped, walking at a steady pace with my gun on and pointed out at the dracs. I release my anger out, shooting one straight out, first shot.
"What are you doing?" Gee is yelling.
I dont turn back, kicking a nearby dracs back and walking straight into the fight, having killed 2 dracs already.
"Stop! Youre going to get ghosted!"
I drop to the floor, rolling behind a gas canister. I sit, away from the situation. What if my dream was right, Im going to get ghosted? No... they have to turn against me first.
I see the other guys running into the fight, a certain redhead running at me. I sigh, jumping out from behind the canister and aiming at a nearby drac.
I grunt as I kick and punch at a drac, it dodging and hitting back. I slam my fist into the side of its face, a growl rising in my throat. It jumps back, kicking my legs and tripping me. I regain stance as he pulls out a gun. I knock it out of its hands, pressing my gun against its head. I shoot and it collapses.
I grin at my fighting. 3 dracs? Thats a lot. I grin at myself and look up, Im getting better at this and maybe I wont get ghosted anytime soon-
I get interrupted by someone tackling me to the floor with a warning shout. I scowl at Gee, who is now lying on top of me. Theres a frozen moment as his fast breath chokes me, our eyes connecting, him holding me on the dusty floor, before he stands, shooting a drac.
"You almost died!" He yells, running after the final drac.
"Thanks. I obviously dont try hard enough." I mumble.
I walk after the guys, turning my gun off and putting it away.
"You ran straight into the fight." Ef laughs. "We need to teach you a lot."
I shrug, jumping back into the car.
"If Gee wouldnt have done that you would have been ghosted. Luckily though..."
Gee sits next to me quietly in the back, squished on my side.
"Look. Im sorry that I said you dont try hard, that was brave what you did there. Dont run straight into the fight again, think about it and talk with us!" Gee says.
"Okay." I reply, not looking him in the eye.
"Hug?" He asks.
I raise an eyebrow and he rolls his eyes, wrapping his arms around me. I focus on a different part of the hug this time, his head on my shoulder. The light pressure of his arms. The weight of his body.
"Guys we gotta check up with Doctor D!" Ar shouts, swerving the car.
"Who?" I question.
"Doctor D. You will see."
I sit quietly, now not in a hug, admiring the different shapes of cacti. We pull into a small path leading to a cracking, blue, abandoned shop.
Skip forward ten minutes and Im sitting in front of a bald man behind a desk. He is getting me to fill out a sheet, to be a real Killjoy. I nod and grin, filling in pages blindly.
"Good to have you on the team now." He grins at me. "I see large potential."
"Thanks, Doctor D, cant wait to be official." I say.
"She killed 3 dracs today so far in one battle." Ef says.
I shrug, looking at my hands in my lap.
"Finally, today or tomorrow, most likely tomorrow, check out the factory in your sector. Theres stuff to blow up." Doctor D says.
Ef rubs his hand together, grinning. Gee slaps his shoulder.
"Thank you, off you go."
We leave as quickly as we came, back down the dust track, back to base.
